Introduction A stamp variation is a different version or format in which a stamp is issued or released – usually compared with the original single gummed perforated sheet stamp. Variations are produced on purpose. Stamps are normally released with adhesive. Any without adhesive are listed in the Specials section. This catalogue lists 14 main Australian decimal mint stamp variations that have been released by Australia Post in 2011 – 2014. (“Paper” variations are now listed in the Specials section. A new Printed Perforations section has been added for the first time.) This information is only partially available on the Australia Post stamps website or in their Stamp Bulletin. Many variations are sold above face value (particularly those in the annual ‘Impressions’ range of limited edition products) hence do not appear in some stamp catalogues. Some stamps appear in more than one section when they have more than one variation. Pre-decimal stamps appear in the Specials section. If a variation’s exact FDI is unknown the month is shown in the Date column. Selected images of some of our favourite variations are shown at the beginning of each section. During the ‘Australia 2013’ World Stamp Expo, 8 different types of Personalised Stamps were available. They had a customer’s image or photo printed onto the stamps as part of the image, not on an attached tab. There were possibly over 9000 variations of these stamps. Only one of each of the self-adhesive, sheetlets and size variations have been added to the Variations Statistics data. See the World Stamp Expo section for more details. (The World Stamp Expo section of this catalogue has also been published separately.) Most of the variations listed have not been purchased and examined in detail. Hence some variation types such as size and perforation may have been missed. Comments, corrections and additions to improve the accuracy of this catalogue are welcomed. If you know of any other variations not listed, please let us know. Any further corrections and updates to this edition will be detailed on the ASV website and included in future editions. Thanks go to the collectors, dealers and Stamp News readers for their input and stamp images. This catalogue would not be as accurate without your input. Abbreviations used in this catalogue:
ASV = Australian Stamp Variations. CDC = Continuous Die Cut. FDI = First Day of Issue. IDC = Interrupted Die Cut. P-stamp = Personalised stamp (A stamp containing a customer’s image or photo, either on an attached tab or as part of the stamp image). PNC = Postal Numismatic Cover. SSS = Souvenir Stamp Sheet.
Currency symbols: Decimal: c = cents, $ = dollar. Pre-decimal: d = penny, /- = shilling, £ = pound.
