picking. The class is excited about their field trip to the

Apple Orchard. They want to learn more about where

apples come from.

When the class arrives at the Apple Orchard the owner of the Orchard explains to the

class how apples grow.

How do you think apples grow?

Turn and talk with a partner.

Just like all living things apples need rain and sun to grow and to be healthy. It takes many months for apples to grow and to ripen.

The Apple tree in the winter

In the winter apple trees do not grow or change. The apple tree

is bare. It is hard to imagine what the apple tree will look

like with apples on it.

What does the apple tree look like in the winter?

Draw a picture of the apple tree in the winter, and write a sentence about what your apple tree looks

like.

The apple tree in the spring

In the spring the warm weather awakens the tree

and it begins a new cycle of growth. The leaves begin to

grow on the branches. Beautiful pink or white

flowers begin to grow too, and bees buzz from flower to

flower.

Draw a picture of the apple tree in the spring, and write a sentence about what your

Why do you think bees are important to helping the apples

grow? Turn and talk with a partner.

When a honeybee lands on an apple flower, it sips the sweet nectar. Tiny pieces of pollen

stick to the bees legs.

Bees are important because they carry pollen from flower to flower. The apples do not grow

until the flowers have been pollinated.

The apple tree in the summer
