picking. The class is excited about their field trip to the

Apple Orchard. They want to learn more about where

apples come from.

When the class arrives at the Apple Orchard the owner of the Orchard explains to the

class how apples grow.

Just like all living things apples need rain and sun to grow and to be healthy. It takes many months for apples to grow and to ripen.

In the winter apple trees do not grow or change. The apple tree

is bare. It is hard to imagine what the apple tree will look

like with apples on it.

like.

The apple tree in the spring

In the spring the warm weather awakens the tree

and it begins a new cycle of growth. The leaves begin to

grow on the branches. Beautiful pink or white

flowers begin to grow too, and bees buzz from flower to

flower.

apple tree looks like.

Why do you think bees are important to helping the apples

grow? Turn and talk with a partner.

When a honeybee lands on an apple flower, it sips the sweet nectar. Tiny pieces of pollen

stick to the bees legs.

Bees are important because they carry pollen from flower to flower. The apples do not grow

until the flowers have been pollinated.

In the summer the flowers grow into apples, and the apples get

bigger and riper.

Different kinds of apples have different skin colors. Some turn red, and others turn yellow. Some apples

stay green even when they are ripe.

After the class learned all about how apples grow, it is now time to pick the apples

in the Apple Orchard!

The class picked up their baskets and got on the

tractor. The tractor takes the class into the orchard. Our

class is picking Red Delicious apples today!

Why did the class bring baskets with them into the

Apple Orchard?

farm and sample the apples.

There are a number of varieties of apples with different colors and tastes. We are going to

have an apple tasting today. We are going to taste the red

delicious, golden delicious, and the granny smith apples. When

you are tasting the apples, some will taste sweet, or tart.

(Split students into 6 groups. Each student in the group will be given a job.

Go over each jobs responsibility.)

*Hand out Materials: Make sure each member of the group has all materials

that they need.

*Vocabulary: Explain to the group what sweet and tart is, and give an example

of each.

*Recorder: Records the groups apples the group tastes, the size of the apples,

and if the apple is sweet or tart.

*Presenter: Will record what the groups favorite apple is that they tasted, and

present the results to the class.
