Choices in School are Changing

Autumn is the Best Time to Plant Grass If the wear and tear of summer has left bare spots in your lawn, now is the time to take action.

Shorter days, cooler nights, and the improved rainfall patterns of late summer and fall are just what new seedlings need to get started. What's more, there are fewer natural weed seeds to compete with new grass planted in fall. For best results:

• Break up the top inch of soil so seeds have a place to take root.

• Use a spreader so the seeds are not spread too thickly.

• Keep the seed moist by light watering several times a day. Continue when new seedlings come up.

• When the new grass becomes well established, water less frequently and for longer periods.

• Follow up about six weeks after seeding with a late-fall fertilizer. It thickens new turf and prepares it for winter.

Time for Tree and Shrub Maintenance Some advice from Better Homes and Gardens for fall gardening tasks:

• Mulch and regularly water newly planted conifers.

• Plant trees such as oak, holly, and beautyberry.

• Clean up rotten, fallen crops and leaves from fruit trees.

• Rake and compost leaves.

• Cut back perennials to 6 inches above the soil.

• Dig up and store non-hardy bulbs.

• Divide and replant overcrowded perennials.

• Plant cool- season annuals.

• Plant spring- flowering bulbs.

About 90 percent of all schools in the U.S. are public schools, but the mix in the other 10 percent is changing.

Private school enrollment down

For grades pre-K through 12, total enrollment in private schools fell 134 percent from 7.3 million in 2006 to 6.3 million in 2016. Meanwhile, public schools saw an increase in their admission of 2 percent during that same period.

According to the Wall Street Journal, private schools took a hit during the 2008 recession causing a drop in enrollment at Catholic schools. But the drop could also be caused by more choices in public schooling.

Charter school enrollment up

Charter schools saw an increase of 6 percent in the last 15 years with an enrollment of more than 5 percent of students in 42 states, according to niche.com.

The publicly funded but privately-owned charters forge their own curriculums and often have values-based teaching.

Homeschooling steady -- or rising

The number of homeschoolers is a matter of debate. Homeschooling rose in popularity from 1.7 percent in 1999 to 3.4 percent in 2012, according to the US Department of Education.

According to government figures, the percentage has held steady, with a slight decrease to 3.3 percent in 2015-2016.

The Home Education Research Institute estimates that homeschooling grew from 2 percent to 8 percent per year and is up 25 percent in 16 key states.

Parents who homeschool generally cite bad school environments and a desire to give religious education or values as the reason for taking their kids out of public school.

Experience Illinois Bicentennial Corn Mazes

Richardson Adventure Farm

It's an annual tradition at Illinois farms and

orchards: can you find your way out of a giant

corn maze?

This year, to go along with the Illinois

Bicentennial events happening all over Illinois,

farms and orchards throughout the state are

adding a new twist to their maze designs,

incorporating images in honor of Illinois' 200th

Most mazes open to the public on the

weekends by September 22 and run through

the end of October.

Participating farms include:

• Pumpkin Creek Farms

• Ackerman Family Farm

DOs & DON’Ts for the Parents of New College Students:

The Best Things You Can do for Your Grandchild’s Brain

On Move-in Day thousands of mini-dramas play out as families detach from their new college student for the first time, having to trust that the values, lessons on judgment and their own willpower will guide them through this new experience.

It is a difficult time as parents recognize that their role as the “Decider-in-Chief” should and must be over. Now, the role of parent must shift to that of a trusted advisor. No longer are house rules compulsory as your child moves forward into the responsibilities of adulthood.

Here are some DO’s and DON’Ts to help you as you make the transition into your new role as an advisor and cheerleader for your young adult.

Do recognize this is a difficult time for all parents as your role in your child life has changed. You will feel excitement about the new experiences and opportunities that await them and you will have feelings of loss as the child you’ve raised steps out into the world on his own.

Don’t tell your child, “These are the best years of your life.” Although you may look back at your own college days with the rose-colored glasses of time and experience, for your child, these days are filled with fun, stress, anxiety, pressure and fear. They are learning how to be the people you have been sculpting them to be. They are testing their own boundaries, learning philosophies, and having new experiences that are

outside of the protected environment you provided for them. Listen, support and advise (when asked) so they can learn to become a responsible, self-reliant adult.

Do discuss academic goals and expectations ahead of time. Have realistic expectations and discuss whether you will be receiving copies of your student’s academic record. Not all colleges provide parents copies and many do so at the student’s discretion. You may still feel that they are your baby and you deserve to be in the know, but most college freshmen are 18, and as adults, the schools require their permission. Also, during that first year away from home, there are many new distractions that they are facing, and most students have a dip in academic performance during their first year away from home (be that their freshman year or transferring in as a junior from a two-year college that they attended while still at home).

Don’t try to solve your child’s problems. Colleges provide a multitude of services to assist your child in making decisions on their own. It is difficult to let go, but you won’t always be available to assist them, and this time of life serves as a great training ground for them to learn that they can reach out to others to help them formulate a well-thought out decision, too. Encourage them to reach out to campus resources such as

advisors, health care services, and career center professionals who are all willing to provide assistance.

Do send care packages. Cookies, treats, even everyday necessities such as shampoo and toothpaste are reminders that say, “I’m thinking of you.” Many times, a little package reminds a student that they are not completely on their own, and that although you are not physically with them, you do have their back and are a support they can fall back on always.

Don’t expect a response to every text. As a busy adult, you may not make a response to every text that you receive, so you should have the same expectation when sending one to your child. A quick “love you”, “have a great day” can brighten your child’s day but shouldn’t come with a string attached that if they don’t respond, you’re going to have hurt feelings, or be angry.

Do take comfort in the knowledge that part of you is going with your child. You have spent the last 18 years laying the foundation for your child’s life. No matter where they go or what they do, they will always carry the lessons you’ve taught with them.

What they say is true: A good education starts at home. And you, Grandma and Grandpa, can play vital roles in your grandchild’s brain development. Employ these smart strategies to put him or her on a path to success.

1. Use your words. - Language skills are crucial to your grandbaby’s cognitive growth, and good predictors of her future success in school. Talk. A lot. | READ. | Sing and dance.

2. Back off. - Studies show coddled, overprotected boys and girls have more problems with bullying, problem-solving, depression, obesity, and anxiety, among other issues, simply because they’ve

never been taught to handle certain situations by themselves. Avoid intervening. | Encourage risk-taking and self-reliance. | Discuss failures.

3. Adjust your screens. - It’s estimated that kids see 40,000 commercials per year, and sit in front of televisions, tablets, and smartphones about seven hours per day. Discuss media. | Help choose good content. | Model good non-screen behavior.

4. Keep playtime simple. - The best toys, cognitively speaking, are the simplest ones—toys that spark creativity, build motor skills, and encourage experimentation. Free unstructured

playtime stimulates every part of a kid’s brain and allows children free reign to discover, imagine, and connect. Give uncomplicated gifts | Get outdoors. | Don’t schedule anything during your time together.

5. Address delays early. - The sooner that delay is recognized and dealt with, the better off your grandbaby will be. Receiving services before age three is especially important, and intervention before 12 months is ideal. If you see something, say something. | Support your grandchild and grandchild’s parents. https://considerable.com/child-brain-development/
