AKKUYU AND SINOP: THE STRUGGLE ON NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS IN TURKEY

Prof.Aytuğ Atıcı M.D.Member of Turkish Parliament for CHP (Social Democrat Party)

Mersin Province/TÜRKİYE

WHERE IS AKKUYU AND SINOP?

Turkey is loceted in the junction of Europe and Asia

Any risk including nuclear will definitely effect all the region.

Any nuclear radiation will not spare gender, race, social status or religion and will harm all the people.

This is why we should gather all our forces against any risk, especially nuclear

AKKUYU AND SINOPPARADISE OR HELL

WHY DO WE NEED NUCLEAR ENERGY?(Government Perspective)

• External Dependency in energy: 72%

• Increase in energy demand: 7-8% every year (1st in Europe, 2nd in the world)

• Employment

• Learning nuclear technology

WE DO NOT NEED NUCLEAR ENERGY!(Non-Government Perspective)

• Not necessary: Use renewable sources

• Health risks: Cancer, DNA damage (inheritable disorders)

• Environmental risks: Flora, marine life, nuclear clouds

• Economical risks: Agriculture, fishery, tourism

• Expensive: 13.5 USD cent/Kw-h

PROBLEMS REGARDING NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS (NPP) IN TURKEY

• Mediterranean Sea is very warm . There will be cooling problems in NPP.

• Risk of earthquake• Future of the nuclear waste is unclear

• The transfer method of raw Uranium is

unclear

• There is a common doubt about the useage

of NPP for peaceful purposes, because

Plutoniuum-239 and Uranyum-233 isotypes

are mentioned in the law.

PROBLEMS REGARDING NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS (NPP) IN TURKEY

• The extension of risks and the

magnitute of health problems are not

predictable in case of an accident.

• The responsibel country is not clear in

case of an accident

• The habitate is very unique around the

NPP

• Great majority of the local people are

against of NPP

CHANGES IN THE SEA WATER• +2-6 C increase in the sea

water temperature is being expected due to cooling procedures of NPP.

• This is a real threat for living organizims in the sea.

• Living organizims will be also lost during water circulation

• Acid rains are expected due to chemical changes in the sea composition.

• Acid rains are harmful for forests and agriculture.

THE RISK OF EARTHQUAKE

Fault Lines in Turkey

• There is an active Fault line (Ecemis) just 25 Km away

from NPP area.

• According to historical

records Mersin area was collapsed 3 times in the past

NUCLEAR WASTE PROBLEMS• Unfortunately there is not any

satisfactory solution for nuclear waste.

• This is the main reason to stay away from nuclear energy

• International Atomic Energy Agency reports 2.8 million cubic meter of radioactive waste is produced all around world.

• It is clear that the amount of waste will increase by using nuclear energy.

• Radioactive waste continue to release radiation millions of years.

• It is not clearly

mentioned how to manage the nuclear

waste in the Environmental Impact

Assessment Report

NUCLEAR WASTE PROBLEMS

HEALTH PROBLEMS

• There ia an important scientific report that proves the risk of childhood leukemia is increased by 117%

• Overall cancer risk is increased by 60% among children living in 5 Km. zone around NPP in Germany.

• It was reported that increased risk of cancer was neither due to an accident nor incidental (Hoffman et al. 2007,).

• Moreover cancer may be inherited due to DNA damage.

• Risk of congenital malformations is well known to be increased

HABITAT

• Caretta Carettas and Mediterranean Seals are under the danger of extinction.

CONCLUSION• Turkey is unfortunately becoming an important nuclear

market being an example to all Middle East.

• While all countries are trying to get rid of NPPs, it is impossible to understand why Turkey is willing to build NPP when you try think logically and humanistically.

• Nuclear lobby semms to be very hapy from the situaton in Turkey.

• To bypass constitutional audit, NPP constrictions are being made by means of bilateral international agreements

• There is no need for nuclear energy in Turkey. All alternetive clean methods to produce energy should be used.
