ACEAS

① approach to the analysis and synthesis concept,

② why we have taken this approach,

③ what we perceive are the strengths and weaknesses–and legacy,

④ the role of ACEAS in fostering new science and discoveries, and

⑤ what we wish to see from the meeting.

The Australian Centre for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis is part of the Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network, and as such has a component of service for that network, and due

to initial funding to direct outcomes for applied natural resource management outcomesand the evolution of TERN into the future.

strengths

• Providing much-needed space and time

• Bridge between scientists and managers –level playing field

• Community-building

• Providing a venue for lively discussion

• Visual applied outcomes underpinned by good science.

weaknesses

• Not enough time for the process

– For the groups to turn into teams, and to work towards high-level outcomes

– For ACEAS generally to develop …

• Lack of suitable location and periferalinfrastructure

• Lack of strong eco-informatics support

legacy

• Improved community

• Interdisciplinary, transorganisationaloutcomes that could not otherwise have been produced

New science anddiscoveries

• new insights into complex problems: variable spatial and climatic influences.

• New application of theory (IUCN red list, RCP).

• new ways of conveying understanding

What we wantout of the meeting

• Improved identification of the role of synthesis centres in ecosystem science

• Sharing of knowledge and options for sharing resources.

• Some ideas and pathways for sustainability

• A publication

• Identification of a transglobal role

• New and deeper partnerships
