IEC and IEEE joined forces in 1999 and
defined…IEC 61850
” COMMUNICATION NETWORKS AND SYSTEMS IN SUBSTATIONS”
EPRI
IEC 61850 - first global standard in the Utili ty f ield
– Supported by ANSI/IEEE
Developed by 60 experts from Europe and North
America – Includes the UCA 2.0 as a subset
Starts to Influence related electr ic areas
– Wind power, Hydro power, Distributed Energy
Implementation in progress by all major vendors

Fundamentals for the Standard
Free configuration The standard supports different philosophies
and allow a free allocation of functions e.g. it must
work equally well for centralized (RTU like) ordecentralized (SAS like) systems.
Interoperability The ability for IED’s from one or several
manufacturer to exchange information and use
the information for the their own functions.
Long term stability The standard is future proof , i.e. it is able to follow
progress in communication technology as well asnew system requirements.

SVC (System Verification Center) qualified by UCA
IEC 61850; SVC Recognized
conformance test center
June 2006 - The SVC (in Baden/Switzerland)
certified by the UCA International UsersGroup to be an IEC 61850 Competence
Center.
The SVC is thereby entitled to officially certifyIEC 61850 conformity.
The SVC is, together with KEMA, the only
test center worldwide that has reached this
status.

Profile Company A
Profile Company B
Interoperable
Interoperable? - An example:
IEC61850 defines three types of
data exchange communication
services – but only one of these
must be supported to beinteroperable !
Interoperable Interoperability
Each mixing of devices with systems from
different manufactures must carefully beclarified in respect of the implementedprofile.
Interoperability yes, but…..
• A communication profile defines the SUBSET of a standard
• Different Profiles may conform to the standard but still not be interoperable
7/23/2019 Abb iec61850
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/abb-iec61850 19/20
Key players• An important part of the standard has been successfully tested
between the key suppliers
• Different interpretation of the standard was detected during the tests
• ABB, and 2 of our main competitors have synchronized theirIEC61850 implementation
Interoperable Profile
One manufacturer…
private
Two manufacturers…
by chanceThree manufacturers …
interoperabili ty !

• Cost effective solutions supporting reuse of engineering
data over time and a reduced need for training
• The data model will contribute to long term stable
solutions.
• Interoperable
• Main stream technology path for major suppliers –
