Introduction-Product Design

Product Design Involves A Broad Approach To The Designing And Making Of Innovative / New Products. ThisSubject Is Aimed At Those Interested In The Way Business And Industry Identifies Potential Products AndSuccessfully Designs And Manufactures Them. It Is Not For Those Who Intend To Design And Manufacture An ItemThat Already Exists. However, You Can Take An Existing Product And Improve It Or Develop An Entirely NewProduct.

Product Design Is Concerned Primarily With The Relationship Between Products, Systems And Those Who UseThem. The Product Design Programme At NID Inculcates User-centric Approach And Processes. Responsibility AndConcern Towards The Social, Physical And Ecological Environments Is Emphasized In The Process Of DevelopingInnovative Ideas. The Product Design Programme Assimilates Inputs In Diverse Domains Such As Human Factors,Cognitive Ergonomics, Form Studies, Studio Skills, Advanced Cad, Research Methods, Design Management,Materials & Manufacturing Processes & Social Sciences. Emphasis Is On Process Centric Approach Which Shapes AStudent’s Education Through Participation And Teamwork. Design Projects Form The Core Of A Product Designer’sEducation, With Gradual Increase In Level Of Complexity And Cover Broad Areas That Product Designers Are LikelyTo Encounter In Their Professional Careers.

Students Are Actively Encouraged To Participate In Collaborative Projects With Industrial Houses, Social Sector, Government & Mncs Design Projects Can Be Broadly Classified Into Domains Of:

Furniture Design

At The Dawn Of Human Civilization, When The Concept Of Furniture Was Not Yet Known, Man, Driven Only By TheNeed To Make Life Easier, In A Natural Way Used Various Objects Made Spontaneously By Nature. A Trunk Of ATree Felled By The Wind Or Rock Served As A Place To Sit, A Flat Stone Block Served As A Base For Performing AVariety Of Common Work, And Soft Moss Of Woolen Skins Served As A Bed. Over The Years, The Creative ActivityOf Humans, Artefacts Began To Be Made Which Replaced The Spontaneously Made Objects Mentioned Earlier.Over The Centuries, Due To Preferences Of Societies That Lived In A Given Age, Their Forms Changed. New TypesOf Furniture Were Created That Fulfilled Specific Functions: To Sit, To Lie Down, For Work, For Dining, Storage AndFor Others. Generally, The Remaining Furniture Constructions From The First Dynasty Of Ancient Egypt AreAccepted As The Beginning Of The History Of Furniture. Meanwhile, There Is Much Evidence To Suggest ThatFurniture Was Manufactured And Used By Humans In The Late Paleolithic And Early Neolithic Period.

Historically, The Most Commonly Used Material For Manufacturing Furniture Was Wood. Archaeological Finds,However, Indicate That In Steppe And Permafrost Terrains, Stone, Metal And Animal Bones Were Also Used. Now,The Modern Designers Paid Attention To A Comprehensive Approach To Designing , Meeting Both TheRequirements Concerning A Satisfactory Appearance, As Well As The Necessary Functions. History Of FurnitureHad Different Time Periods Which Have Different Unique Features In Each. People Moved From Intricate To SimpleDesigns.

Furniture Design-School Furniture

Under The Category Of Product Design- Furniture Design, There Comes School Furniture Also. A School ContainsVarious Zones Like Classroom, Staffroom, Playroom, Computer Lab, Library Etc. And Each Zones FurnitureRequirements Are Different According To The Functions Performed. For Designing Any Furniture We Have To SeeCertain Major Points Which Are As Follows-

Ergonomics- Size Matters When Selecting Educational Chairs And Tables. Age And Height Considerations Are OftenNot Reflected In Furniture Selection, And Consequently The Furniture Is Too Big Or Too Small. Furniture That DoesNot Fit The Users Will Lead To Restlessness And Discomfort, Resulting In A Decreased Attention Span AndReduction In Learning Potential. Children With Long Backs Are More Likely To Suffer Discomfort, Particularly WhenDesks Are Too Low And They Are Forced To Adopt A Poor Posture. The Combination Of Appropriately Sized TablesAnd Chairs Is Critical For The Wellbeing Of Our Children. Ergonomic Considerations Will Make A Big Difference InManaging Pupil Discomfort. Children Prefer Ergonomically Designed Furniture To Traditional Furniture. In AdditionSmall Changes Such As The Introduction Of Sloping Work Surfaces And A Less Negatively Raked Seat Angle HaveBeen Shown To Improve Sitting Behavior As Well As Increase Children’s Satisfaction And Comfort. TheseImprovements Are Not Just When Children Are Sitting. A Recent Study Showed That Personally Adjustable SchoolDesks And Chairs Resulted In An Immediate Improvement In Sitting Posture And Over Time Better Standing PostureAs Well. Movement Plays An Important Part In Seating. Research Has Found That “A School In Which Movement IsSupported And Encouraged Has A Positive Effect On The Learning Ability And Attentiveness Of The Children”

Teaching- Traditionally, Teachers Led In The Classroom While Pupils Were Taught. Teaching Styles Are Changing And Students Now Get Individual Pathways In A Curriculum Diet, Learning Through A Variety Of Mediums. To Support The Latest Teaching Methods, Adaptability In Layouts Is Desirable. Furniture Should Be Easy To Rearrange Into A Variety Of Configurations To Move From Group To Individual Work As Required. Current Furniture Does Not Encourage The Flexibility Required To Suit Individual Learning Environments. “The Classroom Is Like A Theatre. Teachers Are Actors And Pupils Are Spectators. Actors Move Around, Spectators Need To Follow.”

Quality- A Child Will Sit On A Chair For Up To Six Hours A Day Over A Period Of 11 Years Or More. Furniture MustTherefore Be Durable And Easy To Clean And Repair. Based On Purchase Cost Criteria Alone, Furniture Can BeUnattractive, Unergonomic And Of Poor Design. The Result Is Students Feeling A Lack Of Ownership Over TheFurniture, Encouraging Graffiti And Vandalism, And Shortening The Life Span. Furniture Must Be Durable AndEncourage Feelings Of Ownership.

Procurement- For A Long Time There HasBeen A ‘One Size-fits All’ Approach ToSelection. The Same Furniture Is Chosen ForAll Classrooms And Other Learning SpacesAcross A Variety Of Schools, Resulting InFurniture That Is Not Task Oriented. WhileStraightforward And Simple, Such APurchasing Policy Is Inappropriate For Today’s21st Century Learning Environments.Furniture Should Be Fit For Purpose. MostClassroom Chairs Will Not Be Suitable ForLibrary, Laboratory Or Dining Hall Use.However, Some Furniture Can Be Adapted ForDifferent Purposes If It Is Designed With ThisClear Goal In Mind. Collaboration BetweenTeachers, Pupils And Specifiers Will EnsureAppropriate Furniture Is Selected ForDifferent Spaces. Furniture Should Be AMetaphor For The Curriculum, EncouragingFlexibility And Creativity. It Must Be Easy ToAccess, Identify And Select Fit For PurposeFurniture.

Case Study

You Are Supposed To Design A Furniture For Play Area Section Of Primary School For Children Upto The Age Of 5Years. You Are Supposed To Solve The Case Study Following A Concept, A Theme, Colour Scheme, MaterialApplication, Size And Also The Type Of Furniture.

Design Process

As The Case Study Is Based On Children’s Play Area Of Age Upto 5 Years, First I Have Studied Their Behavior, Likes,Dislikes, Habits, What Attracts Them, How They Will Be Happy To Stay There And Enjoy. There Are Certain Points ToBe Kept In Mind Like Their Anthropometric And Ergonomics. I Have Made A Checklist Of Those Points WhileBrainstorming Which You Find In The Further Pages.

Research Board

After Doing The Brainstorming, I HaveResearched About Various Types Of FurnitureIn Trend, Which Colour Is More Liked By TheChildren, What Environment Make Them FeelHappy And What Makes Them Love To PlayThere. The Shapes And Forms Used InChildren Play Area Furniture And OtherImportant Factors.

Concept Board

After The Study Of Certain Points I Took TheInspiration From A Multi Coloured Ball WhichIs Detachable. For The Second And ThirdFurniture I Took The Inspiration FromAlphabets As The Children Are Small And AreAt The Stage Of Learning Alphabets AndThese Furniture Will Make Them Learn MoreFast. A Play Area Can Be In A Closed Area, ButChildren Feel More Refreshing And DelightedWhen Are Left To Play In Open, Connected ToNature Like For Example- A Garden WithSlides And Playing Equipment

Material Board

• Plywood• High Density Foam• Plastic Paint• Polyester Fabric• Resin• Carpentary Tools

After The Study Of Certain Points I Took TheInspiration From A Multi Coloured Ball To BeUsed As An Ottoman And They Are AlsoDetachable. When It Came To Chair AndTable I Took The Inspiration From AlphabetsAs The Children Are Small And Are At TheStage Of Learning Alphabets And TheseFurniture Will Make Them Learn More Fast. APlay Area Can Be In A Closed Area, ButChildren Feel More Refreshing And DelightedWhen Are Left To Play In Open Connected ToNature Like For Example-a Garden WithSlides And Playing Equipment.
