1Match your orchid with the proper growing area.
Growing outdoors in coastal California? Cymbidiums are tough, rewarding orchids tolerant of a wide variety of temperatures. Want a plant for indoors? Try a phalaenopsis or a paphiopedilum (lady's slipper), many of which enjoy the same household temperatures as people do.
2 Don't let your plant sit in water. Many orchids
succumb to too much love in the form of overwatering. Let your plant drain freely, then dry out a bit between waterings. Once a week is a good starting point; water more often in hot weather, or less often if the potting mix stays wet.
3 Filtered light is best. Few orchids do well in direct
sun or heavy shade. Outdoor-grown orchids can be happy in dappled shade under trees or beneath shadecloth—at least
Top Orchid Growing Tips
55% for cymbidiums or more for most other orchids. Indoor orchids need light, but not direct sun. Be sure your plant is protected at different times of day, not just when the sun is directly overhead.
4 Repot when the mix breaks down or the plant
outgrows the pot. Remove dead, mushy roots and old mix, then use a clean pot and orchid potting mix, available at many plant nurseries and home centers. Don't use regular potting soil, and don't overpot; leave only enough room for a couple years of growth.
5 Buy plants from a reputable grower.
Nurseries specializing in orchids not only have more unusual plants than the local grocery store, but their staff can offer expert growing advice and suggest plants to match your conditions and temperature constraints.
6 Join an orchid society. An orchid society is a fun,
social way to learn more about growing orchids!
