He has lead several recent seminars on China, drawing information from published sources, such as Gavin Menzies’ “1421, The Year China Discovered the World”, “Mao, the Unknown Story” by Jung Chang, MinZin Pei’s, “China’s Trapped Transition” , Theodore White’s “Thunder Out of China”, Jan Wong’s books “Red China Blues” and “A Comrade Lost and Found: A Beijing Memoir”. Peter gleaned insight from Professor MinZin Pei, Director of Keck Center for International and Strategic Studies, Claremont McKenna College, and Katy Drew, a Santa Barbara resident who lived in Mao’s China as a child and young adult. Peter will touch on the history of China from 1400 AD to today, and then pose a series of questions regarding the role of China in the 21 st Century in light of its current position as the world’s second largest GDP nation, and particularly the challenges that it faces which flow from its history. Mead Northrop will introduce Peter. Cliff Sponsel: Nominee for 2011 Man of the Year Award The Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara and Planned Parenthood are nominating Cliff Sponsel for the 2011 Man of the Year Award. Cliff came to Santa Barbara in 1954 and has been a member of Cosmo since 1981; he is 103 years old and regularly attends meetings. Cosmo member and Past President Peter Kruse is a well-know lecturer on a wide variety of current events, particularlyin association with Vistas Lifelong Learning. Montecito Country Club Golf Tournament– Wednesday,August 10Join us for Cosmo’s annual golf tourney at thewonderfully challenging Montecito CC course. Estimatedcost is $55 which covers lunch, greens fees, cart andprizes. Shotgun start at 1pm. This year’s uniqueformat features TWO holes on each green. We will be treated to lunchand a “back-stage” tour by Ron, a member of thePolo Club for 40 years, followed by world-classplayers in competition. The cost of $50 perperson includes lunch, the games and behind-thescenes tour. In addition, prizes will be awardedfor the most remarkable chapeaus in a specialLadies Extravagant Hat Day. Sunday, September 25 Circle Bar B Ranch DinnerTheater – MatineeHowdy! Enjoy a Western dinner and great show at the CircleBar B Ranch, a 20-minute drive up the coast. It is located at1800 Refugio Rd., north of Goleta off Hwy 101. The theater,an intimate converted barn and bunkhouse, has presentedcomedies and musicals for 37 years. Dinner featuresbarbequed Santa Maria tri tip and chicken. Plan to arrive at12:30pm for socializing, with dinner served at 1pm. At 2pmwe’ll attend the show, “Silvia”, a beautiful, funny andprofound play about a couple’s life after their children haveleft the nest. Last Meeting: July 4th Picnic128 Cosmo members, their wives and/or significantothers enjoyed the 29th Annual July 4thPicnic (onJuly 7th), at Manning Park in Montecito. We gatheredat 11:00 for the BYOB social hour, followed by MikeCavallo’s excellent BBQ. The menu included Tri-Tip,chicken, beans,salad, potato salad, garlic bread, strawberryshortcake, lemonade, coffee and waters – all for $16. Thefestive tables were decorated with American flags and redbouganvilla.

Mead Northrop served as Master of Ceremonies, leading thePledge of Allegiance and a rousing chorus of “America theBeautiful.” Bob Zimels read a poem, “I am an American” byDr. Elias Lieberman, for the invocation. Mead recognized ouroldest member, Cliff Sponsel, who invented the thermostatand gave it to General Motors. A former judge, Cliff has beennominated for 2011 Man of the Year Award (see separatearticle on page 2).

Mead thanked Paul Fink, Chair, and the entire PicnicCommittee: Bob Sorich, Bob Zimels, Bob Thompson, RichardKennelly, Ed Vernon, Steve Little, John Bracken, Glen Neikirk ,Bill Schultz. Art Kvass and Dwight Coffin for their very goodplanning and execution of the “fun” event.All agreed, “Same time next year!”
