Pope John Paul II Assembly proudly serves Sir Knightsand their families in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows

Volume III - Issue III November 2009

FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR'S REPORTPatrick Schafli - Faithful Navigator

November is a difficult month for many of us - right from the beginning as we mark thefeasts of All Saints and All Souls, we are reminded of our dear ones, our Knights andLadies who have passed on to their etemal reward.

With that in mind, kudos to Our Lady of the Valley Council 10889 for theirinitiative to hold an annual Memorial Mass for our deceased brothers. Besides giving us an

opporhrnity to reflect on the charity, unity and fratemity expressed by our fallen brothers during their service asKnights, it offers a unique opportunity for the Knights of the district to stand shoulder to shoulder in unity asthey honour their memory. Four Sir Knights of the Assembly turned out to provide an Honour Guard for theMass this year, and were well received - clearly, the Honour Guard highlighted the intention of the occasion, and made the Knights very visible at the Mass. Our thanks go the council for organizing the event, and to FrAbundo for accommodating it at St Lukes, and celebrating the Mass for us there.

As you know there will be no formal meeting this month as the 4ft Tuesday date is being used for thejoint Knights dinner. If you have not already purchased your tickets for this auspicious event, please get intouch with SK Carl Foley or one of the designated council representatives to order yours - remember the cutoff date is November l4'n! See you there...!

It is Remembrance Day as I write this report, and I thank all of our Sir Knights who participated in thememorial ceremonies at the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows cenotaphs. Many of us, I'm sure, have had relativesor friends in the forces over the years, and today is always a poignant day as we recall the years, and in somecases even their lives, which they sacrificed that we might have the freedom we enjoy today. Certainly, todaywas a great day to be a member of the 4ft degree and to be able to demonstrate our affection for our country andfellow citizens by publicly volunteering our time to take an active role in this important memorial. Not fornothing is the 4tn Degree known as the visible arm of the order, and your loyal actions today once again helpedraise the profile of the Knights of Columbus in our community; indeed, even in tuxes, we were instantlyrecognized as Knights by members of other groups and the general public.

In closing, I am reminded of the epistle of Saint James, where the Saint repeatedly exhorts us that faithwithout love and good works is dead, and useless, and that we need to ACT on what we believe (our faith). AsKnights, we hold dear our principles of charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism - we would do well to mindJames' words and look to how we can live out his call for action as we are faced with calls to our charitv. our unitv. ourfraternity, and our patriotism, every day of our lives.

MEDITATION

PATRIOTISM is concern for our fighting men

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my cotffse, I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7

The following inscription was reportedly discovered on an old stone sentry on the island of Gibraltar.

God and the soldierAll men adoreIn time of trouble,And no more; For when war is overAnd all things righted,God is neglected -The old soldier slighted.

Nations last when citizens remember the important things in times of difficulty and in times of ease. Howdoes our assembly minister to homeless veterans?

There is nothing more soulless than a religion without good worlrs unless it be a patriotism which does notconcern itselfwith the welfare and dignity of the individual.- Brigadier General S.L.A. Marshall.

To lmow ourselves has always beenthe greatest of all lessons. For, tf

we know ourselves, we will knowGod. And, in knowing God, we willbecome like God.
