the net as they float in the water. Plankton is a deep sea delicacy. This is eaten raw by aquanauts.

That large vehicle on the far side of the picture is a sealab capsule. That is where the aquanauts perform their experiments

Those small fish-like objects are quick-moving fish. Those give the aquanauts a view of the struggle for survival among marine life.

Analysis and Discussiona. What is the purpose of the aquanauts’ experiment?b. What do they find out from their

experiments?c. Read the report again. Note the

italicized words.This These That Those

Analysis and Discussiond. These words –

This TheseThat Those

-are called demonstrative pronouns. Can you tell why they are called such?e. Those words are not in italics because they are adjectives – not demonstrative pronouns. Compare them with the italicized demonstrative pronouns.

RememberA demonstrative pronoun points out a

particular person, place or thing. Demonstrative pronouns are this, that, these and those.

This and these point out nouns that are near the person speaking. That and those point out things that are far from the person speaking.

This and that are singular. These and those are plural.

RememberHow can you distinguish a

demonstrative pronoun from an adjective?

When this, these, that and those are used before nouns, they are adjectives, not pronouns.
