TREATY UPDATE
Yo community,
Starting soon the Treaty Office will begin to host
family meetings again. We held a second one with
the Charlie Family in July. There was a good
turnout! Thank you Auntie Marion Wamiss, you
are a great cook!
At the meeting I
described as clearly as
possible what the two
governments have
offered the Gwa’sala-
‘Nakwaxda’xw so far in
treaty negotiations.
There is a lot of
different and difficult
language used in
negotiations. As much as possible the treaty team
– Chiefs Paddy, Tom and Willie help to give
examples in an effort to clarify what governments
are saying to us.
The family members raised really good questions
and concerns. For example, the question of land
and what amount should we discuss or counter
propose?
Regarding a cash component in a final agreement
– what is enough to help to rebuild what has been
taken or lost? It is not easy to come up with
numbers or amounts because our people do not like
to measure and tally what the Creator gave.
However, we have agreed to negotiations and it is
important to speak about our rights, our title and
what we need for the future of our people.
It has been good to have dialogue with community
members at the family settings; attendance
includes representation of youth, parents, and
elders. In the future we would like to find ways to
more fully engage youth and small children to help
promote a greater understanding of the histories

In the next short while, we wish to continue round

would like to learn more, voice their concerns and

Our Treaty Team is very honored and grateful to

listen and hear your voice as we prepare to
negotiate toward a Treaty that will work for all of
our Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw members. Gila’kasla

___________________________________________________________________________________________________
Good morning everyone! I have an important announcement to make about the start of school for the
Gwa'sala-'Nakwaxda'xw School students in Grades 1-7.
Due to many recent renovations and upgrades to the school we have delayed the opening of school until The school will be opening on Thursday, September 10 for Grades 1-7 from 8:55 to 10:30. Friday, September 11 is full
day for grades 1-7.
Monday, September 14 Preschool and Kindergarten starts from 8:55 - 12:00.
Monday, September 21 K's start full days.
The bus will be running to and from school on this day. Friday, September 11 school will be a full day. We
will post a bus schedule next week. Kindergarten and Preschool will start on Monday, September 14.
At this point, crews are madly installing a new roof and all new flooring. So our staff do not have access to
the building. We also have everything from the classes being stored in the gymnasium which need to be
moved back. We don't even have our phone lines back. Hopefully late next week we will have access. If
you are wanting to register a student or need to talk to a staff member please call or drop by late next
week.
I know this isn't ideal but the school is starting to look amazing and it will only get better in the coming
weeks! Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for understanding. "Strong Together In All We Do"
Thanks.

GWA’SALA – ‘NAKWAXDA’XW RECYCLE DEPOT
Hello family and friends,
As you know I am the new operator of our Recycle depot we have, I have been here since May now and
quite familiar with the system now.
I have attended a small workshop already, and will be attending a conference in October so I can learn
more.
There is quite a list of items I could take in the depot, accepting household furniture that can go into the
general bin (the big one), such as. Beds, couches, dressers, TV stands, bed frames, also I could take old
lumber, roofing tiles, basically anything.
Also, I have another bin, it accepts metal, such as. Washers, Dryers, Fridges, Freezers, Metal bed frames,
and dishwashers.
If you have any trouble or can’t get anyone to help you move your junk up to the depot, please don’t
hesitate to get a hold of me, then I could help arrange help or move it myself up to the depot
After all, the purpose of our community having a recycle depot is to reduce the amount of garbage we send
off any hopefully, eventually stop the landfills!
Also we have the General Household Garbage bin and the Metal bin to prevent roadside build up
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call me, email me, or even pop by when the depot is
open and chat with me.

Shain Jackson Artist Statement
Shain Jackson (Niniwum Selapem) is Coast Salish from the community of Sechelt. He is an
artist and a lawyer who has represented the interests of Aboriginal communities and
organizations throughout British Columbia in relation to a broad array of issues. After years
devoted to the legal profession in 2007 Shain decided to leave his practice to focus his attention
on the many facets of B.C.’s Indigenous art.
Artistically, Shain works in Coast Salish design using a wide range of mediums such as Cedar,
copper, glass, aluminum, acrylic with work ranging from small carved pieces of jewelry to large
scale sculpted public art pieces. As he has continued to develop his own artwork to a higher
level, he has had the privilege of collaborating with many amazing local artists. On his own, and
in partnership with these artists Shain has garnered numerous awards and acclaim both locally
and internationally.
The theme existing almost invariably in Shain’s work is that of unity - bringing together diverse
groups and working toward a common vision. Revisiting old Coast Salish stories and teachings,
he not only incorporates these messages into his artwork but also into all areas of his life. Aside
from being an accomplished artist Shain has taken very seriously his responsibilities to his own
community of Sechelt and the urban Indigenous community at large. Further to this, through
his company Spirit Works, Shain: has developed programs aimed at providing employment and
training to Indigenous youth; donates space, equipment and expertise to Indigenous artists in
need; consistently donates time and artwork to numerous charitable organizations; has designed
and facilitated workshops aimed at providing cultural teachings for at-risk Indigenous youth;
and much more.
Shain’s biggest contribution to the Indigenous art world was the creation of an authenticity
program aimed at protecting the economies and culture of Indigenous artists in BC. With the
advisement and backing of many top Indigenous artists and cultural keepers Shain founded the
Authentic Indigenous Arts Resurgence Campaign. Hosted by Aboriginal Tourism BC, this is a
branding scheme that has paved the way for major shifts in resources relating to Indigenous
artwork back to Indigenous artists. This initiative has also offered Indigenous artists
unprecedented control over their work, something unattainable under current intellectual
property laws. On every level this program has been a resounding success.
Currently Shain has been named for appointment to the board of directors for the First Peoples’
Cultural Council where he will continue the work of protecting and revitalizing Indigenous
cultures.
