Ann Dupuis began her academic career as a lecturer at the Albany Campus on July 1st, 1993. At that stage only 100 level papers were offered in the Humanities and Social Sciences and Ann aught 176.101 Introductory Sociology in semester 2. Almost all the students she taught were from the 1993 intake of social policy and social work students who were a tight cohort and proud of being foundation students at the new campus. She also has fond memories of the camaraderie that existed among staff.

Grant Duncan began as an employee of Massey on 26th January 1993. The campus has grown very beautifully in terms of architecture and environment. Our department (then known as the School of Social and Cultural Studies) was moved from the west precinct to the Atrium building when it was completed in 2000. I now teach undergraduate politics here at Albany, and I very much enjoy the physical and social environment of the campus. I feel I have ‘grown up’ along with it, in a sense, and we have watched the transformation of Albany at large from semi-rural to urban at the same time.

Dr. Nitha Palakshappa. I started my career with Massey in February 1993. I remember being told to buy a pair of gumboots when I was hired because so much of the old campus was still under construction!! It wasn’t quite like this in reality, but it was still an amazing feeling being one of the first staff members on the Albany Campus. Those early years were really enjoyable and I have very warm memories of the staff and students around at that time.

When Michael Belgrave first saw the Massey Albany site at Labour Weekend in 1992, it was an empty bulldozed paddock, but when the campus opened in March 1993, there were over 30 buildings, including a library and student center and the grass was starting to grow. The largest lecture theatre was too small for the numbers coming to do social work and lectures had to be repeated. Many of those foundation students were older, second chance students who thrived academically despite juggling family life and part time work.

Mrs Gabrielle Graham. In February 1993 I walked into a brand new building surrounded by bare earth on the Oteha Rohe campus. There was no furniture and we had the challenge of deciding what we needed in order to set up a health and counselling clinic for students. The total number of staff on the campus at that time was so small that we could all fit around a board table. Since that day, I have delighted in watching the steady growth of the campus along with the maturing trees and gardens. I love working at Massey, particularly because it is constantly changing and evolving.
