Principal’s Patch On Wednesday morning I had the pleasure of announcing our School Leaders for 2020 at our Upper
School Parade. This announcement followed an exhaustive process that had an initial pool of twenty-
eight students fill in a written application and present a speech to an audience of over two hundred
and fifty fellow students. Student voting then took place and the pool was narrowed down to nine
students who had to survive an interview process with a panel including Mrs Tina Brosnan, Mr David
Ford and me.
Historically, only four students have been selected for the roles of School Leaders at Woombye
State School but this wasn’t to be this year because of the high quality of students who stepped up
for the opportunity of becoming a School Leader. During the final stage of the process, Mrs Brosnan,
Mr Ford and I could not find a way to trim the final group down to four thus it was agreed to
announce five School Leaders for 2020.
As a result of this process our congratulations are extended to Mirrah H, Madison A, Lily S, Dylan S,
and Enzo W for being selected as the Woombye State School Leaders for 2020.
My thanks and congratulations are also extended to the other twenty-three students who displayed
the courage and made the effort to stand up and put themselves out there for others to choose
from. Well done. Everyone associated with Woombye State School should be proud that we have such
a high quality student body attending our wonderful school.
Tina’s Business Dear Parents,
Student Learning
As a school, we regularly review our students’ performance and measure the achievement growth that
occurs between assessments. This year I have eagerly reviewed the student’s results in their PAT
Comprehension and Mathematics. Some of our students have made significant improvements to their
learning. Congratulations to all students who have given learning a red-hot go; we can see the great
learning that has occurred.
Class Lists
Our teachers do a great job of knowing our students. Our teachers are passionate about ensuring the
very best opportunities are provided to ensure all students grow and learn to the best of their ability.
Each year a significant amount of time and thought goes into the development of class lists by our
teachers. This involves many discussions between the teachers and is based on observations both inside
and outside the classrooms, as well as many conversations with our Support Team. Parents may have
information that may be useful to this planning process. Information such as fears, anxieties, and
worries that are unknown to the teacher would be useful to know our parents are encouraged to share
such information with their child’s teacher.
We have a great school, we have great students, we have great teachers and
we have great learning occurring every day in the classrooms.
To ensure all these great things can happen every day, all students at Woombye
State School are expected to Be Learners, Be Safe and Be Respectful. From
time to time, our students do not always get it right. Whilst this is part of the
learning, there will be consequences for their actions.
Over the last two weeks, we seem to have an increase in the number of students who are not following
these expectations. Of concern is the number of reports of Bullying, physical misconduct and the
disruption to learning environment.
At times, it feels as if Bullying is something no-one ever wants to speak about or acknowledge that it
is occurring. At times it hard to know if Bully is actually Bullying. If the
behaviour involves the intentional misuse and abuse of power, where the
intent is to scare or intimidate then it is bullying.
If you are concerned that your child is being bullied or your child’s safety at
school, please speak to your child’s teacher; speak to either Paul or myself.
This is something that we feel very strongly about and have no tolerance for,
any students who are identified intentionally misusing or abusing power
(bullying) will be removed from the playground/classroom and their parents will be contacted so that
we can support the child to change their behaviour.
Repeating
When considering repetition for a student, there are many aspects to the child’s learning development
that must be taken into consideration. A valuable question to ask is “what will be different?” There is
significant research available that demonstrates there are more negative than positive outcomes. Some
of the essential points from the studies are that overall, repeating:
Does not improve academic outcomes (although it may appear to do so for that repeated year);
Often leads to negative attitudes toward school and learning;
May result in behavioural problems;
Does not improve ‘school readiness’.

Thank You Woombye State School Volunteers:- Two weeks ago,
Woombye State School hosted a morning tea thanking and
acknowledging the great efforts of our wonderful volunteers
around the school. Our parent volunteers cover a wide range of
tasks and activities around our school including general classroom
support in most year levels, Tuckshop, School Uniform Shop,
School Banking, garden club, Student Mentor Program, Religious
Instruction providers, support on excursions, and all activities
associated with our very energetic Parents and Citizens Association Team. Beside our parent
volunteers, we also are supported by a number of community members who provide mentoring for a
number of our students weekly. We are also privileged to have the support of the
Woombye/Palmwoods Men’s Shed who currently organise the organic garden beds with the students
as well as take on other tasks around the school when requested. Woombye State School volunteers
are awesome – thank you for making our school a great place!!!
Classes for 2020:- At present, the School Administration Team is currently working out which
teachers will be on what class for next year. This will take a number of weeks as we are currently
waiting for confirmation about some teachers’ intentions for next year. All families are requested to
be patient during this time of preparation.
News from the Woombye Special Education Unit (SEU):- Some students have started transitioning
to their new classes for 2020. There have been some holdups with some class groupings for 2020 due
to circumstances beyond our control as explained by Mr Paul Lowik and Mrs Tina Brosnan previously.
These students will commence their transition as soon as possible. The year 1 students have been
busy visiting their new classes and new teacher in the past couple of weeks. They also have received a
colourful two sided placement highlighting their experiences. This is mostly colourful photographs on
the student in their new environment. The preps going into 2020 also enjoyed receiving their
colourful placemat. Hopefully the preps going into year 1 will be able to start transition soon. These
placemats have been popular amongst other students also. Some students have completed transition
activities in their new classroom. By the end of the year they should be very familiar with their new
environment. Well done students. All students with disability will have been involved in a transition
program by the end of term which suits their requirements. We hope to provide each child with a
countdown calendar or another surprise. This will be determined by their case manager as some
students may not require a countdown calendar. I welcome the new students and families that have
joined our special education program or as the students say, ‘our club’. Students frequently ask me if
they could join our club. This year we have welcomed approximately 15 more students with a disability
and their families to ‘our club’. Hope you have a happy and safe weekend.
Ellen Cummings, Head of Special Education Services
Students Leaving:- If your child is not returning to Woombye State School
for 2020 and is currently not in Year 6, please contact your child’s class
teacher or School Office now. We need these details as soon as possible to
help with the balance of numbers for next years’ classes.
Christmas Concert 2019:- This year, Woombye State School is hosting its Christmas Concert on
Wednesday 4th December. This year will be very different as we will be hosting a daytime concert.
Instead of each year level performing, this year each class will be performing their
own song. Because of the number of classes, the concert will be split into two
halves. The Prep to Year 2 classes will perform from 9:30am until 10:50am when
the students will break for their normal lunch break. The Year 3 to Year 6 classes
will then perform from 11:30am to 1:00pm. All parents and family members are
invited to attend if you wish.
This change was decided upon for a variety of reasons including the storms that have washed out
previous concerts during the past few years. Also, the number of students who return to school for
the evening concerts, particularly in the middle and upper school is quite disappointing. By conducting
the concert in school time allows all students the opportunity to participate and enjoy the thrill of
performing on stage to an audience.
House Captains 2020
Following the announcement of the selected School Leaders for 2020,
the process for selecting our House Captains has now begun. The
timelines are explained below.
Wednesday 13th November:- Nominations for House Captains and Cultural
Leaders for 2020 open.
Friday 22nd November:- 3:00pm – Nominations close
Wednesday 27th November:- House Captain Candidates present speeches
to their House Groups. Voting takes place immediately after speeches.
Cultural Leader Applications determined through applications.
Wednesday 4th December:- “House Captains” and “Cultural Leaders”
announced on parade.
Nambour State College Young Pinnacles Scholars Program:- The application process for NSC’s 2020
Young Pinnacle Scholars Program (YPS) is now open for students who are currently in Year 4 or 5.
This program provides enrichment opportunities for bright and highly motivated students. Young
Pinnacle Scholars participate in a number of challenging activities with other like-minded students over
four ‘Excellence Days’ throughout the year at Nambour State College. The four ‘Excellence Days’ occur
once each term; Year 5s during Week 4 and Year 6s in Week 5.
Each of the four days cover a range of subject areas including
Science, Mathematics, English, Humanities, Makerspace,
Health/Physical Education and the Arts (Drama/Music/Art). As
we also have a fully functioning farm, our YPS students
participated in Agricultural activities earlier this year, and in 2020,
we will also be introducing Media Arts and Coding workshops, as
well as MasterChef sessions. Young Pinnacle Scholars are provided
with a variety of opportunities to access and sample subjects and
facilities in a high school setting. Places are limited and
applications close 29th November 2019. Applications are available
from the Woombye State School Office.
Premiers’ Reading Challenge:- After a long wait, students who
completed this year’s Premier's Reading Challenge will be
presented with their certificates on parade next week. Please
come and celebrate their achievement with us.
Most students will end their borrowing next week as all home
readers and library books are due back to school by Friday, 29th
November.
