Secrets to Shoot Great Video12

#12: Check memory and batteries. It is impossible to shoot great video if your battery dies or you run out of storage space.

#11: Adjust your device settings. Use the highest resolution your device offers. Be sure the device is not set to end the recording automatically after 10 or 20 seconds. Experiment with various settings for portraits, landscapes, night-time and action shots.

#10: Stabilize your device. Shaky footage is hard to watch. Rest your arm on a stable surface to steady the camera. Or, if you plan to shoot a lot of video, invest in a portable tri-pod, mono-pod, or a mini tripod for your device.

#9: Plan ahead. Plan your shots before you record anything. For example, if you want to capture the emotion on someone’s face, make sure the camera is close enough to see the person’s eyes.

#8: Think about sequences. Wide establishing shots, close ups and reactions help you tell a story and keep your videos visually interesting.

#7: Let it roll. Record three to five seconds of extra footage before and after the real action you want to capture. You will have more editing flexibility and you may capture some great spontaneous moments.

#6: Move, don’t zoom. Zooming produces shakier video and poorer sound quality. Whenever possible, physically move the camera closer to your subject instead.

#5: Use available light. Unless you want a backlit effect, position yourself with the light behind you so it illuminates your subject. Keep in mind that low light and bright sunlight make it harder to shoot good quality video.

#4: Shoot in landscape. Shooting video in portrait mode will produce black letterbox frames on your 16:9 screen. It also lowers your video’s resolution.

#3: Don’t ignore sound. If you want to capture conversations or reduce background noises, invest in a quality microphone. If you are recording video on your smart phone, try using a small external microphone for better results.

#2: Explore aperture, focus, and focal length settings. Explore how these settings affect your video. For example, use a low aperture setting for close-ups to make faces stand out.

#1: Make mistakes. Don’t get frustrated or discouraged if your footage doesn’t come out exactly the way you imagined it. Have fun with your video device and remember that the more you use it, the better your videos will be.
