JAPAN The Japanese are very interesting people. Their unique culture has developed in relative isolation due to the mountainous and island-based nature of the country. As the Summer Olympics from 2020 wil l take place in Tokyo, thousands of people are expected to travel to Japan. If you're one of them, or if you just want to visit this country some day, here are a few things that you should know about the Japanese.

1. Japan had

no writing system in their ancient days.

2. The Chinese

characters were introduced to them

in the 4th century.

3. The combination of Chinese writing

and the native Japanese languages

created a complicated system that is used for

modern Japanese.

4. There are

4 writing systems in Japan:

Kanji, Hiragana,

Katakana and Rōmaji Rōmaji

5. KANJI is mainly used for the

lexical elements: nouns, verb stems, adjective

stems, and so forth

6. HIRAGANA has

rounded letter shapes, which are mainly used for the

grammatical elements

of sentences such as

particles, auxiliary verbs,

and suffixes of nouns

7. KATAKANA has an

angular letter shape, which is most often used for

foreign words and also for

the purpose of emphasis

8. RōMAJI is the application of the

Latin script to write the

Japanese language. It literally means

‘roman letters’

loan words,

known as gairaigo. The number of foreign loan

words is steadily increasing.

written in vertical lines,

from right to left. Writing in horizontal lines has become more
