"10 years ago, I graduated from an Art school, and likemany others, I was on the way to be a commercialpainter. But one day, I met a friend who was in lovewith Vietnamese Calligraphy and wanted to keep itsvalue, traditions and spread to Vietnamese youngpeople and the world. That was when I fell in love withthis art and has been pursuing it ever since."

"Now, Calligraphy is not only my career, but also my life,

my love. During the past 10 years, I met and taughtmany interesting people, from the 80 years old man to4 years old children. And through these classes, I havefound so many joyfulness, happiness, and smiles."

Calligraphy has a long history in Vietnam. It waspreviously used for Chinese characters and Chu Nom, a

local version of Chinese characters.

However, most modern Vietnamese calligraphy insteaduses the Roman-character based Quoc Ngu, which has

proven to be very popular.

Even when the education was restricted toscholars and elites in Vietnam many years ago,

calligraphy played an important part inVietnamese life.

On special occasions such as the Lunar New Year,people would go to the village teacher or scholarto ask for a calligraphy hanging (often poetry, folksayings or even single words) for good luck or as adecoration.

People who could not read or write also oftencommissioned scholars to write prayers whichthey would burn at temple shrines.
