How We Express Ourselves
Dear Parents of Year 6 EAL Students,
The Year 6 students have been learning about how people express themselves and they have been busy thinking
about what inspires their creativity. They have been involved in all sorts of creative expression through the Arts.
Their inquiries have been guided by the central idea:
Creative expression involves inspiration, limitation and reaction.
Thinking Tool
We have been specifically looking at:
reactions to experiences what inspires us and how why we express ourselves creatively the limitations that influence creative
expression
This funnel shaped thinking tool helps the
students with the organisation of their
thoughts and ideas when they are researching
and/or reflecting on the creative process.
How will your childs learning be assessed?
Your child will be expected to transfer the skills and knowledge learnt. They will be expected to use the thinking tool
above to organise their thoughts and show their understanding of the central idea. The following rubric will be used
to assess evidence of understanding:
Perspective
Understand that reaction is
personal and is impacted by our
prior experiences.
Reflection
Understand that inspiration is
personal (and can come from
anywhere).
Connection
Understand that creative
expression has purpose.
Connection
Understand that limitations
impact creative expression.
I always think deeply aboutmy own reactions and why I
react the way I do
I always think deeply abouthow other people may
react when I express myself
creatively
I reflect thoughtfully inorder to discover where my
inspirations come from
I always think about andam interested in - what
people, including myself,
are trying to achieve when
they express themselves
creatively
I understand limitations andmake selections that give
me focus and empower me
to express myself creatively
How can you help?
By discussing what your child is learning at school and reflecting on the experiences he/she has, will help build
conceptual understanding of the present unit. Talk about inspiration and creative expressions which are typical for
your cultural heritage and how they are relevant to the central idea. Also, please use your home language(s) to
discuss key concepts of this unit as well as new vocabulary which will help in maintaining and developing theacademic language ofyour childs mother-tongue.
Thank you for your continuing support,
-- Ms Kyla
