Year Six Science Assessment
1) Mammals are warm-blooded, have fur or hair, don't lay eggs and give
milk to their babies.
Put a tick or cross in each box if the animal shown is a mammal or not.
Chicken Deer Snake
Polar Bear Giraffe Crocodile
2) Draw a food chain in the box, using the information below. (You do not need
to spend time drawing the animals, if you wish, just write their names in the
boxes.)
Order can be reversed but arrows must be also

3) Carefully read through the questions on this dichotomous key. Use the key
to identify the wasp in the picture (or on display)
PICTURE CAN BE DISPLAY ON IWB IF COLOUR PRINTING IS NOT PRACTICAL (OR A
SHEET OF WASPS PRINTED (ABOUT 20 PER PAGE AND THEN GLUED IN BY
CHILDREN)

EVENLY SPACED STRIPES?

4) All living things can be identified by seven key signs - seven things that all
living things do. Mrs Gren was a way to remember them!. Write down four of
them here - you will be given extra credit for using the correct scientific terms!
FOUR FROM:
MOVE, REPRODUCE, SENSE, GROW, RESPIRE, EXCRETE, NUTRITION (or variants
thereof)
Allow 'Breathe', 'Breed' etc but point out these are specific to certain organisms
and don't apply to all living things and are not the 'technical' words.
5) Tick the best habitat for each of these living things…
rabbit hutch pond field
Penguin pond desert ice-cap
Lion zoo jungle savanna
Dragonfly pond ice-cap zoo
The wasp is a GERMAN WASP

6) a) Label this polar bear to show 2 adaptations that help it survive in its
environment.
2 FROM: Thick fur (for warmth), small ears (for warmth), forward facing eyes (to
hunt), white fur (for camouflage), large flat paws (to walk on snow) or any other
reasonable adaptation… (no need for children to give reasons in brackets for
credit)
b) Label this eagle to show 2 adaptations that help it survive in its
environment.
2 from sharp beak (for hunting), sharp claws (for hunting), large wings (for flight),
sharp eyesight / forward facing eyes (for hunting), or any other reasonable
adaptations (reason not needed for credit)

7) Jim collected some berries like these.
a) Berries contain seeds. Why do plants produce seeds?
To reproduce / for new plants to grow (idea of reproduction)
b) Not all berries can, but these can be eaten. Tick the main reason plants
produce berries like these?
To help spread the seeds To look pretty
when animals eat them
To protect the plant from For people to eat
birds and animals
8) Jenny noticed that the berries in her garden were often red. She carried out an
investigation. She hung 50 red, 50 blue, 50 green and 50 yellow beads in the
bushes in her garden. Then she asked Jim to find as many as he could in 2
minutes.
This table shows how many he found of each colour:
a) Which colour of bead was
easiest to spot?
red
b) Jim and Jenny think the
colour of the beads might
have something to do
with the colour of the berries

Why do think many berries
turn red when they are
ready to be eaten?
So birds / animals can spot them and eat them (more than the unripe
black/green/brown berries)
8) Number the life cycle below to show the correct order for this plant.
Position of numbers is not relevant - only sequence (ie 2 can be anywhere as long
as it is followed by 1-3-4)
9) Label this flowering plant to show the basic parts.

We have a high percentage of Chinese EAL students who are very scientific, high achieving learners but sometimes forgot the basic words (despite remembering the technical ones!)
You might replace this with a picture of a flower and labels for the main parts of a flower.
