The following projects investigate interaction as a

design feature. It is a way of creating positive human

environments and integrating an emotional impact

within a space. Interaction adds another layer to a

spatial experience, and can induce a sense of inner

reflection, ownership, inclusion, and learning.

INTERACTION + RETAIL“Fold-up” Store for AIAIAI: Music Accessory Design

The rituals within retail influence how we place value on the things we buy. We take cues

from the environment to guide our interactions with retail, and in doing so we associate

items with certain significance. Like the products within, the AIAIAI fold-up store requires a

simple step-by-step assembly process, making it possible to ship from one place to another.

Our team researched infographics through the lens of language, We discovered essential

components used throughout an entire spectrum of infographics. Visitors learn the basic

components, understand how the interactions between these components effect their

visual interpretations, and use a kit of parts to create their own mini infographics.

INTERACTION + LEarningAdaptive Reuse: Library for University at Buffalo

This facility combines the traditional

library paradigm with research on creative

environments. The overall space planning

and concept was based on Steven Johnson’s

principles for creative environments from his

book, Where Good Ideas Come From. These

principles create ideal conditions for ideas

to be formed, and inform the interactions

between people, information, and space.

Furniture arrangements and groupings also

took cues from Steelcase’s four modes of

work, Focus, Learn, Collaborate, and Socialize.

INTERACTION + Exhibit“Instinct ”: A narrative exhibit for the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek Museum

10 pieces were selected from

the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek

collection to create a journey

that tells a compelling story

about human nature. The

translucent curtains densely

surround the basic survival

instincts, and open up as one

moves through the exhibit to

more complex human needs.

INTERACTION + CommunityMedia Wall As Sidekick: POP / Client: Human Ecology Communications

We have developed multiple layers over

the current college communications

that will help the media wall connect to

other spatial zones and become a tool

for community building.

One of these layers is POP: a positive

intervention that generates a quick chain

reaction in the way people interact,

communicate, and understand space.
