(and advice from a Marketer on how to manage it)
Do you think that spam only works on stupid people?
Actually, anyone can fall for it.There are two kinds of spam:
Type 1: Idiotic spam
Who falls for it = Idiots
• Viagra or sex enhancement
• Naked pictures of famous people
• Weight-loss scams
• Get rich quick schemes
Type 2: Content spam
• Games & quizzes
• Personality tests
• “Free” application or content downloads
• Seemingly useful services that also sign you up for spam
Who falls for it = All of us
It usually starts with an offer that is
somehow interesting
or compelling.
How does content spam work?
Which leads you to something that seems credible and engages you to interact:
They use content to get you to invest your time for some sort of payoff (ie – your IQ score):
Before the payoff, you are asked for a piece of private information (like an email or cell phone #):
Secretly in another window or below your screen, the terms and conditions are outlined:
By completing the challenge and getting the payoff, you have automatically signed up for a service you didn’t want:
And even if you cancel, you’re stuck paying for the first month.
Obviously, the best defense is never to get sucked into this content.
But sometimes you can’t help it –so what else can you do?
