TULBAGH GOLD MEDAL SHOW 2018

We are proud to announce that the judge for the in-hand breed classes as well as the harness classes for the Tulbagh Gold Medal Show from 26 to 29 September, 2018 will be Elizabeth Russell of the Gartconnel Stud in Scotland. Elizabeth is currently the President Elect of the Mother Society and when she visits us in September, 2018, will be the President of the Society. We are honoured that Elizabeth has agreed to be our judge during her presidential year which would add so much more to the event, especially as she will most probably mention us in her Presidential report at the following AGM in 2019. We are also trying to organise for a small show in Windhoek in advance of Tulbagh as she will be touring Namibia prior to arriving in South Africa. It would be an ideal opportunity for our Namibian members to at last have a dedicated Welsh show at home, the first ever, and how much more prestigious could it become with the President of the Society judging.

BEAUFORT WEST SHOW 2018 We have once again made arrangements with the Beaufort West Show Society and the Hackney Horse Society to hold a Welsh show at Beaufort West from 21 to 24 March 2018. Final details and entry conditions will be announced to members early in the new year

TULBAGH GOLD MEDAL SHOW 2017 Our in-hand breed judge was David Roberts of the Tawelfan Stud in Wrexham, North Wales who was also one of the three judges for the harness classes. David has been a member of the Mother Society since 1982, has been a Panel Judge since 1995 and has shown extensively with considerable success. He is a member of Council of the Mother Society and is Chairman of the International Committee. His full judges report is being published in the 2017 Journal which will be printed and distributed to members early in the new year. He has also made some pertinent observations which are also in the Journal and which members are earnestly advised to read and apply the suggestions made by an experienced exhibiter and judge. The full results are published on page 3 of this newsletter

PASSPORTS AND AHS Members are once more reminded that it is your responsibility to ensure that your passport and African Horse Sickness inoculations are up to date and entered in the passport. In addition, if you need to move your pony, especially if it is coming back into the Protocol Area, the regulations concerning the movement and health certificate are of vital importance. Failure to comply with these will result in your pony being placed in quarantine at your cost for at least 14 days prior to it being released to come home. Members are earnestly requested to submit the passports not yet certified to the Secretary for certification because without this process, your passport is not valid for movement purposes in terms of the regulations If you need additional passports for other ponies, please apply for these timeously to avoid any last-minute rush.

DISPLAYING OF NUMBERS Numbers are allocated to competing ponies for a specific purpose of identifying that particular pony. It is therefore of paramount importance for exhibitors to ensure that they display the correct number of that pony in all classes, be it in-hand, under saddle or in harness. Where an exhibitor is displaying the incorrect number, the Steward is entitled to disqualify that pony which will not be able to compete further in that class. It is therefore in your own interests to ensure that you are bearing the correct number for that pony BEFORE you enter the show ring.

Members are encouraged to provide the Publisher/Editor of the Journal with articles on their and their ponies’ achievements. It is always of interest to other members to know why and how some members started with Welsh ponies and what they have done to get where they currently are. Articles are always more interesting when accompanied by pictures of the ponies, so start looking for those pictures of the earlier ponies and let the Editor have them. The Parys Christmas Festival Show Committee invited our Society to participate at this show with 30 ponies. We are proud of those members who supported this initiative because we are sure that they learned a lot and enjoyed the experience. It was also the first

time that this show had exhibited Welsh ponies and from the comments which were heard from the spectators and the organisers, we are sure that a follow-up invitation will be made to participate with even more ponies. A lot has been learned about showing in an enclosed arena and it was evident that the ponies were not used to the contained noise and the very deep sand.

PARYS CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL 2017 Judge’s Report

I was invited to judge at Parys Show and was very interested to see Parys and the Afridome that I had heard so much about. I was not disappointed. The venue is magnificent, hospitality fantastic and as for the town itself, well, that was amazing. So many shops and restaurants and beautiful places to see. Back to the Show. Here, I can honestly say that I was disappointed. Not only by the performances in some of the classes, but also by the fact that whatever David Roberts had to say in Tulbagh about turnout, manners and exhibiting in harness, nobody took any notice of it at all. The Society has rules. Why does nobody abide by these rules? If one plays cricket or soccer or ANY sport, there are rules, and you play by the rules. So why not play by the rules of a show? It’s no different. Many of the competitors threw their chances away by ‘doing their own thing’. Mr Roberts specifically said ‘enter the arena in a clockwise direction’ (those are the Welsh rules). Did anybody do it? NO! I believe that the competitors were told to do this but the first person entering the ring did not and so everybody else just followed the leader. Mr Roberts also mentioned that when being awarded a prize, remove/lift your hat or cap – it is good manners. Only ONE competitor did this throughout the show. Another thing I noticed was very few competitors said ‘thank you’ to whoever awarded the prizes. There were sponsors there awarding prizes and they got no thanks at all for their fantastic sponsorship. A few words cost nothing; nor does a smile. In the under 18 years class there was a young lady chewing gum whilst being judged and it continued throughout the class, even when being awarded her prize. That would not sit well under an overseas judge at all. It did not with me either. Now, to the biggest factor of all. SPEED. How many times I had to put a pony down the line because it was being driven too fast. When asked to ‘show your

ponies’ there was nothing left for the pony to offer as a show. It was very disappointing to have to do this, but, it had to be done. I guess you were all shocked at the result of the tandem class. Well, it was a very difficult class to judge. Three tandem entries. One entry, the leader was kicking at the wheeler all the time. The Chief ring steward wanted to disqualify it. I said ‘no, just let’s see’. Another entry the leader kept getting out of its harness, it was not wanting to go forward and at one point was next to the wheeler. That’s not ‘tandem’. The third entry were not well matched and did not have the best ‘outlook’, BUT they never put a foot wrong. They pulled as a tandem in a straight line and were well behaved. Hence the result. Ladies Fine Harness delivered a lot of speedy entrants. The winner was the only one who kept at a park trot, which is what the rules say. The supreme championship was also not easy. Normally a pony qualifies to go forward to a championship but here there was an entry fee payable and you could get into the championship. Some ponies ‘bought into’ the class and this made things difficult as they had not qualified earlier during the show. The supreme winner was one of them. Although it was called out in its class, it was not placed; but when it came to the supreme, he performed beautifully. He gave an excellent performance. A well balanced, controlled show. When asked to move on, he extended in a controlled well balanced rhythmical pace. Well done! I left the show disappointed with the results, but I sincerely hope that after you have read this report, you will look back, think about what I have written and think about what you saw at the show and match up the two.
