When you first hear today’s Gospel you might think the
message doesn’t really apply to you. The Pharisees and the
leaders of the Jews were people of power and influence. Most
of us are not people of power and influence. Don’t be so
quick to discount the relevance of the Gospel message to your
own life. At one time or another, we all have opportunities to
exercise some type of “authority” – it might be organizing a
parish picnic, teaching Faith Formation, planning a family
reunion or something as simple as a putting together a family
party. The message that we must provide a good example
when we are in these “leadership” roles is extremely im-
portant. The message is also about not abusing the power
that is given to us. For some people leadership skills come
easily and they can coordinate the people working with them
without making them feel used or insignificant. My experi-
ence has been that there are more people in positions of lead-
ership who try to have everything done their way and people
that work with them end up being resentful and thinking that
their ideas are not accepted. The last lines of the Gospel give
the best advice: “The greatest among you must be your serv-
ant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever
humbles himself will be exalted."

The recent passing of my brother has left a hole in my heart that will take some time to heal, however, with your continued prayers and love I know that I will come out on the winning end. I am so grateful to those of you who traveled to Raleigh on last Friday for the services. I am especially thankful to my entire Parish family for your support and concern.

Intentions for All Souls
November is the month dedicated to our beloved deceased. There will be cards and envelopes available for you to make intentions for your loved

per intention card is required. The tradition of praying for the deceased is found in 2nd Maccabees 12:43, and has been an ongoing tradition in
the Catholic faith.
