Like John the Baptist, our ministry is to point to
the Christ. Whatever we accomplish, like John, we
need to acknowledge that it is not done out of our
power or ability but by the grace of Christ working
through us.
As we grow in the knowledge of Christ we grow in
wisdom. So in the second reading Peter comes to
the realization that God shows no partiality. There
really is no division among people, between those
who are chosen and those who are not. Jew and
Gentile no longer make sense to Peter. And he ar-
rives at this wisdom through his experience of Jesus
and what Jesus stands for.
The life of an evangelist is one of continuing growth.
God accepts us as we are, but that does not mean
that we must not allow the wisdom of God to change
and transform us. As we come to know more kinds
of people, we also must come to the realization, like
Peter, that God does not play favorites. All people
are gifted and beloved by God. No one is left out.
And our message should enable each and every per-
son to hear that indeed they are loved and cher-
ished. The proof of this love of God is in the person
of Jesus, his beloved Son, who in turn gives his life
out of love for us.
señalar a Cristo.

Baptism of the Lord
Today we celebrate the baptism of Christ in the Jordan. This is the second epiphany, or manifestation, of the Lord. The past, the present, and the future are made manifest in this epiphany. The most holy one placed Himself among us, the un-clean and sinners. The Son of God freely humbled Himself at the hand of the Baptist. By His baptism in the Jordan, Christ manifests His humility and dedicates Himself to the redemp-tion of man. He takes upon Himself the sins of the whole world and buries them in the waters of the Jordan.
