CALL TO WORSHIP Jeff Wilhelmi

One: Sing to the Lord a new song; sing all the earth! All: Here we are to bless the Lord’s name, to sing our salvation story. Great is our Lord, and greatly to be praised! One: For the Lord wraps the heavens around this cradle of earth, All: Fills the dark night with honor and majesty, One: Fills the bright day with glory and light, All: Fills this sanctuary with strength and beauty. One: Let us also be filled with God’s holy intent. All: Let’s sing to the Lord, all the earth!

* OPENING SONG 637—O Sing to the Lord Hymnal

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

One: Our lessons today tell of a God who comes to life in unlikely places, and of a Holy Spirit who takes shape in unlikely people.

All: Though we’ve heard these stories many times before, we confess it is often difficult to believe we too are part of God’s story and song.

One: Where there is confusion or perversion of your love, Where arrogance or deceit lead the innocent to harm, All: Where privilege or power keep people down, Fill us with your love for justice, Lord, teach us a new song. One: Where ignorance or superstition make us small, Where anger or revenge make us dangerous, All: Where doubt or anxiety corrupt the spirit,

Grow us large in grace, Lord, teach us a new song. One: Where the church is rigid or hurtful, Where tomorrow is lonely or frightening, All: Where age or illness or injury rob life of joy,

Favor us with your spirit of hope, Lord, teach us a new song.

—silent prayer—

One: In our confession, we pray together, All: Most Merciful God … you know what parts of the heart we hide, what evils are not said out loud. Hear now each heart’s troubled song. Teach us to sing a new song.
