7CRADLE MOUNTAIN HOTEL COMPENDIUM 2018
Cradle Mountain Hotel is a stylish, four star wilderness Hotel, set in the extraordinary bushland that fringes the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
The most famous of Tasmania’s national parks, Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair National Park encompasses an awe-inspiring land of craggy mountains and deep valleys, heathlands, button grass moors and ancient forests.
The landscape around Cradle Mountain was carved by ancient glaciers and is an incredibly scenic environment of mountains and lakes, open moorland and deep gorges. Tasmania’s tallest mountain,
Mt Ossa (1617m) rises from the plains at the centre of the park. Dramatic ranges push countless majestic peaks towards the sky. The still, deep waters of Lake St. Clair (167m) stretch 14 kilometres in length to the southern border of the park. This glacial lake is Australia’s deepest and is
fringed by forests, mountains and walking trails.
The Park’s distinctive flora includes rainforest species such as myrtle, tree ferns, celery-top
pine, King Billy pine and the fabled, long-lived Huon pine. The world’s largest heath plant, the palm-like Pandani thrives here and is found only in Tasmania. Australia’s only deciduous tree, the Fagus (Nothofagus gunnii), is also endemic to Tasmania, and turns the hillsides of the park to burnt red and gold from late April to May.
