Here in Melbourne, you can be forgiven for perhaps not knowing the radio stations of other cities, but the most popular station in Sydney is 2GB. Having almost 15% of the market this radio station with its news-talk format has been broadcasting since 1926 – 93 years this month of August.
Over 470 years ago (1548) Filippo Bruno was born in the Italian kingdom of Naples and the young boy grew up to be a philosopher, poet, and mathematician. He soon became famous for his cosmological theories – that is, the branch of astronomy that tries to explore how our universe began.
Filippo, better known as Giordano, took the ideas of Nicolaus Copernicus - who said the earth was not the centre of everything - and extended this thinking. Giordano maintained that the stars in the night sky were other suns that had their own planets an idea known as cosmic pluralism. Although many of Giordano’s ideas are complex and would have barely been understood back then, he was soon viewed with suspicion as a heretic because of his opinions.
Giordano wandered around Europe spending time in France, Germany, Switzerland and England, but it was while living in Venice that he was betrayed to the Roman Inquisition. In 1593 he was taken to Rome and imprisoned, and finally after six long years of interrogation the judge read out the final verdict – to be burnt at the stake.
Today in Campo de’ Fiori (Field of Flowers) the meadow is gone replaced by a paved piazza and there you will find a large statue of Giordano. The statue is located on the very spot where Giordano became a martyr – in the cause of freedom of thought and free speech and he was adopted by many as a hero.
Today in Australia few people will have heard of Giordano Bruno, but in Sydney there is that radio station broadcasting with the call sign 2GB - in his honour. The original holders of the radio station’s licence were Theosophists who admired Giordano’s ability to be a free thinker.
Australia has been known as a place where casual is part of the culture. Where to be relaxed is the norm. A place where we abbreviate our words (G’day) and where we put ‘o’ on the end of our words (Stevo, arvo, journo, etc) and almost everybody gets called ‘mate’. This easy-going attitude and informal language together with our egalitarian attitudes is the essence of Australia. This is country where we can argue and bet on two flies walking up a wall and still enjoy a BBQ together.
If you examine Giordano’s beliefs you too might find you disagree with some of his ideas but hopefully you can agree to disagree without becoming disagreeable. I don’t agree with all of Israel Folau’s theology but what Rugby Australia has done is un-Australian.
It’s worth a thought. Mark B Vodéll Principal

NATIONALLY CONSISTENT COLLECTION OF DATA ON SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY (NCCD)
Today, 2nd August was the day designated by the Commonwealth Government for the completion of the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). All schools must collect and submit information each year for the NCCD. This is detailed in the Australian Education Regulation 2013. Schools provide this information to education authorities. Funding from the Australian Government
for students with disability is based on the NCCD through the student with disability loading.
Students are counted in the NCCD if they receive ongoing adjustments at school due to disability. This ‘help’ allows them to access education on the same basis as a child without disability. The NCCD uses the definition of disability in the Disability Discrimination Act 1992.
Protecting the privacy and confidentiality of all students is an essential part of the NCCD. Data is collected within each school. Personal details, such as student names or student identifiers, are not provided to federal education authorities.

VICTORIAN SCHOOLS MOUNTAIN BIKE COMPETITION
On Sunday 9 students from Gilson College Taylors Hill and some students from the Mernda campus went to a mountain bike competition at Lysterfield. The 2.4km course for my age group was a section of the track that was used in the Commonwealth games. The start of the track was a wide gravel and up hill road. The track then went onto a steep uphill single track but after a tight corner there was a rocky down hill section that included a number of berms, (berms are downhill corners with a steep bank that allows you to go fast around the corner). The third section was flowy downhill and narrow with some rocky sections. Then there was another slight uphill section to the finish line. We did two laps of the track.
The older students
completed a longer course with more hill climbs and rock drops. In the end some of the Gilson College students won 2nd and 3rd place for their age group. Corin Pope (Year 3)
PEP HOURSIf you are in need of
PEP hours or would like to volunteer to help, the College is requiring help in the Library during Book week. Duties include but are not limited to assisting in sales of books during recess and lunch times and after school. If you are interested and are able to help please call the College Office and register your details.
DRIVING SPEED ON CAMPUSA reminder to all parents please note that while you are driving on campus the speed limit is 15km. For the safety of everyone concerned please adhere to this at all times.
CHANGE IN TRAFFIC CONDITIONSAs you may have noticed we introduced a traffic
Page 6
management process during the afternoon pick up times at the end of Term 2. This meant that traffic could flow in and off campus without being held up by cars parked in the free flow traffic lane. Thank you to our Parent Community for being supportive of this process.
GCCC NEWS• 3rd August - We welcome
you to join us this Sabbath as Pr Bernard Deojee shares the word. The worship program will start at 10.00am followed by a time to fellowship over a hot cuppa and a snack. Life groups will commence straight after snack and chat. Please bring some healthy snacks to share.
PB4L HOME MATRIXTo further help support our students in becoming
The VALUE for Week 4 of Term 3 will be:
Compassion means not only caring for others at all cost, but rejoicing with them in their good fortune and success. True compassion is generous and those who possess it are able to lose gracefully, rejoice in the good fortune of others, in addition to reaching out to those in need.
God is the ultimate example of compassion. The ultimate, all-powerful, one and only supreme Being in the universe took on the form of His created beings and died a horrible death on a cross because
He loved them so much and could not bear to see them perish. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
Ephesians 4:32LOVE is kind...keeps no record of wrong...does not envy
respectful, responsible and resilient members of society, we are proud to announce that we now have a, ‘at home expected behaviour matrix’. This was developed by a wonderful team of parents from our school. The Matrix outlines for our families the expected behaviours that we should be seeing throughout the home. To help support your child, we would love it if you could spend some time going over and teaching these behaviours at home. If you have any feedback or suggestions about our home matrix, please feel free to contact the Deputy Head of Primary, Mr Damon Lawty via SEQTA. Please see below for the home matrix. Refer to table on page 14.

NUDIE FOOD DAY On behalf of the SRC, we would like to introduce our new ‘Nudie Foodie Tuesdie’ initiative which promotes healthy eating and supports
Page 8
the combat against rubbish. The amount of rubbish produced and found around the school is overwhelming, so we came up with the idea of a Nudie Foodie day. On Tuesdays, starting Term 3, we encourage students to bring unpackaged and fresh foods to school for recess and lunch. Students can bring items such as yoghurt, fruit, nuts, vegetable sticks, dips, sandwich, rice or pasta. We aim to minimise the amount of rubbish produced in our school environment by bringing package free lunches. With your help, we can make our school a cleaner and environment-friendly place.

TERM 3 BOOK WEEK COMING UP
Our yearly Book Week will be celebrated this term during
Week 6, August 19-23
Theme – The Bible “My Secret Power”
For this year we have altered the Book Week theme to align more closely with our Christian values and emphasis.
Each class has chosen a Bible character or story to portray during
our Book Character Parade. The class teacher will decide whether to let students come as any character in that particular story or may
assign different roles to students that relate to the story. Students may also decide to come as a different Bible character to
that studied in class for that week. For further details on how you can assist please consult your child’s
teacher or a note may be sent home outlining what is needed.
Students will parade in their costumes in the gym on Friday, August 23.
Parents are also welcome to participate in the parade as your
favourite Bible character.
