USF COM has an effective governance structure that contributes to effective institutional planning with respect to the education, research and service missions of the college.
The Board of Trustees and the President of the University of South Florida provide efficient oversight of the operations of the COM through an appropriate governance strategy and have been supportive of the college.
Planning and development activities have resulted in the college’s commitment to provide an outstanding educational environment and an innovative curriculum to encourage lifelong learning.
Continue to work on shared governance and change management concerns. The degree and pace of change at USF COM has created many new opportunities for positive growth and development as well as anxiety and concerns by some.

Committee #4: Educational Program For The MD Degree
Strong curricular planning and reform has created an innovative, nationally- recognized educational program.
Excellent clinical training and assessment opportunities are available through Center for Advanced Clinical Learning.
Student performance is strong on external measures including the assessment by residency program directors.
There is a mismatch between the learning styles and preferences of the Millennium Generation and the teaching preferences of the faculty.
The medical education facility is antiquated and does not reflect everyday concepts of architectural design in support of the educational program.
Summary:
Summary:
The COM matriculates a highly-qualified, diverse study body.
The development of a series of 7-year honors program with various institutions in state has created relationships and opportunities and has promise of bringing high quality students to USF.
The innovative curricular program is a recruitment tool.
There is dedication to recruit qualified under-represented minorities by the dean and other senior administrators.
The plans for two new medical schools in the state may create challenges in the recruitment of students from the existing pool.
Committee #5: Medical Students: Admissions
Committee #6: Medical Students: Student Services and Learning Environment
Summary:
The Offices of Student Affairs and Financial Aid consistently are rated as outstanding by our students.
Students’ transitions are carefully planned: Orientation, Profession of Medicine, Introduction to Clerkships, and residency counseling.Independent counseling services are available at all times for students.
There is a need to increase scholarship funding – particularly to recruit those under-represented in medicine.
Committee #7: Faculty
Summary:Factors that enhance faculty recruitment and satisfaction:
Large University campus, health campus with three collegesCarnegie research institutionNew energetic administration focusing on all three missionsCommunity awareness and relations improvingInformation Technology DivisionNew curriculum for basic sciences and clinical sciencesCreative Office of Educational AffairsNumber and variety of hospital affiliationsLocated in Florida
Factors that may hinder faculty recruitment and satisfaction:Limited and aging research space with inadequate research core facilities, infrastructure, and staffAnticipation of future competition for state support and top-notch faculty from two recently approved medical colleges in the state.Few minorities. Physical separation between university and major clinical affiliates
Committee #8: Educational Resources: Finances
Growth and expected growth of practice plan as Florida and Tampa Bay region populations to grow.
There has been improvement in practice plan metrics and overall financial well-being.
Low indirect cost recovery rates from main campus.
Impact of future state support in climate of additional medical school financing.
Competition and recruitment for special practice physicians, including diversity in areas of high-market demand and related expenses.
Low financial commitment from affiliated hospitals to support COM.
Potential threat of large group practice entering market.
Summary:
Committee #9: Educational Resources: General Facilities and Clinical Teaching Facilities
Summary: New, state-of-the-art Center for Advanced Clinical Learning provides excellent teaching and assessment opportunities.
Excellent animal facility in support of research.
New patient care and research facilities are planned.
Significant upgrades have been made to the security of the main COM complex on the North campus.
Cordial relationships have been developed with affiliates that provide appropriate training environments for clinical care delivery, but do not provide support funding to the same degree as seen at “top 50%” schools.
Existing teaching and research facilities do not allow for expansion of programs.
Research core facilities need to be developed and renovated.
Committee #10: Educational Resources: Information Resources and Library
Summary:
The IT and library staffs are responsive to the needs of the students and faculty and have improved significantly since last visit.
The implementation of modern information technology has contributed to the success of the college’s educational endeavors.
