President’s Message
Ann Galt
digital imaging and framing. You submit; you take a risk. You get accepted
(...or not!) And, the ultimate, you get an award. Sometimes the news is good—
a reward for all the effort. You join the company of the best. Your painting is
part of an exhibition viewed by many. Other times the news is not so good,
bringing a mix of emotions. You may feel badly, have self-doubt, be envious
(just a little), be joyful for peers, and, hopefully, will reflect.
Artists strive to express themselves better or differently. They practice. They
paint. Take out the paper and just paint. Waste the paper. Not every
painting is a hit! But you may be surprised at what happens. After all, it’s
watercolor! I like a golf comparison. Lessons, practice, and playing make you
a better golfer. There are ups and downs. Review your play on an annual
basis, not on a game-to-game basis. That concept applies to entering
exhibitions. Increase the number of exhibitions you enter and evaluate your
experiences from year to year.
In the last few years, we have asked jurors to join us at our receptions and talk
about their jury process. Jurors judge for an exhibition, not individual paintings.
Jurors differ. Remember the results may not be about you as an artist. Attend
our receptions!
We have two workshops coming up this year on series paintings, process, and
self-critique. Consider taking them. They may open up a whole new painting
world. CVC meetings include critique time. Attend a CVC meeting. Come to
our Holiday Social. Bring in your paintings! Get feedback!
Ultimately, paint for yourself. Keep your own voice or style. Try new
techniques, new subjects, or new processes. That is what will bring the best
reward.
EXHIBITIONS
Our 2016 Fall Member Exhibition at the Simmons
Pioneer Memorial Theatre Loge Gallery ends
November 5. Iain Stewart, AWS, NWS juried the
Exhibition. Be sure to visit, if you haven’t already.
Sixty-seven artists submitted 129 pieces. The
Exhibition accepted 70.
Exhibitions excite. Anticipation hangs in the air
throughout the whole process from entry to
reception. You paint, investing your vision, time,
materials, and emotion. You prepare, stressing over
My two paintings were not accepted in
this year’s Fall Member Exhibition.
After a day of hard labor in my garden, I
picked up a brush and started painting.
I went to the Copperton Park paint–out
where Maggie Harrison and I painted
the Kennecott mine. And, I tried again!
I entered the 2016 Fall Salon and was
accepted! The good news is that there
will always be an exhibition to enter and
it is always worth the effort.
-Ann
From his home in Calgary, Brent
Laycock brought Alberta with him, a
reflection of his homeland showing in
the gallery of his work. After displaying
his style of art, he turned to a
demonstration of how he achieves
those loose, abstract landscapes and
florals.
Brent’s approach is to work quickly
and boldly, using a large flat brush,
holding it in different ways to make
different strokes, moving around the
paper to tie it together. During his
demonstration, he interjected his
thought processes, experiences, tricks
and philosophy. Brent advises
against touching a stroke. “Stay calm,
it may work out!” He moves on,
leaving white spaces for the
possibilities they present for the
finishing touches. “Do what you know
to do, leave the hard places until last.”
He recommends an approach he
adopted from Robert Genn, describing
a painting as being “woven.” And, as
he finished his painting Tuesday
evening, he indeed wove those
remaining white spaces into accents
and shapes that unified and defined
the scene.
For all those present, it was a
personal gift of insight and inspiration
for the land he paints and the style he
has mastered. Thanks Brent!
He invited us to join his email

Painting Light in Watercolor
With easy conversation, sharp wit, and
masterful brushwork, Iain Stewart,
recovering architect, and Signature
Member of the American Watercolor
Society and the National Watercolor
Society, guided students through five
days of instruction that will long be
remembered.
The Utah Watercolor Society was
honored to host this national and
international award-winning artist for
our Fall 2016 workshop. Starting with
the foundational basics of drawing
lines, keeping a sketchbook, and
planning the light source for your
paintings, students started the week
practicing graded washes.. Students
were encouraged to keep a
sketchbook, draw from life every day,
and paint a sky every day (advice
passed on from artist Rowland Hilder).

UWS September Meeting
RECAP
We were all glad to once again see
our friends at our September Utah
Watercolor Society opening social. We
were offered a glimpse into another
inspirational year with previews of
workshops, paint outs, and
presentations that we have lined up
for the coming year.
Our new President, Ann Galt
presented the outgoing President,
Colleen Reynolds with the UWS
official pin. Ann praised Colleen on her
many accomplishments during her
service to our organization.
Ann also gave us details of the ZAP
grant she applied for and received for
UWS. The money has already
purchased an Epson split screen
projector, which will be very
advantageous for workshops and
demos.
Kristi Grussendorf brought us up to
speed on new Western Federation
rules. Mark Reynolds did a very
informative framing demo. Lindsey
Sawatski catered with yummy food.
And, Maura Naughton reported on the
winners of our first 6 years of the Mary
Straight scholarships.
We had raffle prizes, a swap and sell,
tables for information on Pinterest,
Twitter, Amazon Smile, Journaling
though illustration, and also how to
link up to the UWS Google Calendar.
Fun, informative, and motivating!
UWS September Mini
Workshop RECAP
The Sept 23-24 Mini Workshop Visual
Vibrations, presented by Shelley
Redford Young and Bruce
Robertson, was a big success. Their
unique way of team-teaching
presented each participant with new
challenges while also offering
solutions. A combination of demos
and painting exercises gave us all a
lot to think about and encouraged us
to enhance and expand on our
creativity by using unique color
combinations. Having live professional
models challenged us to process and
paint quickly, to capture the energy of
the moment. The workshop was fast
paced and educational Their
presentation met expectations by
using a small block of time to
incorporate relevant information and
useful techniques.

UWS October Member
Meeting RECAP
Quick wit, quick painting, and
masterful technique characterized the
amazing painting demonstration by
artist Iain Stewart, AWS/NWS, at our
October UWS member meeting. After
teaching a full day on Tuesday at the
Fall 2016 workshop, Mr. Stewart then
demonstrated his painting technique to
Utah Watercolor Society members for
another 90 minutes at the general
membership meeting. Speaking to a
packed house, Iain walked observers
through his painting process, from the
first layer of variegated wash to the
final darks in the foreground – and
explaining all the nuances in between,
from people to cars to shadows on
buildings. Along the way, the audience
was treated to a little insight into the
artist’s life and background, from being
the son of a well-known artist to being
a “recovering architect.” Members
watched a beautiful watercolor painting
appear on the paper before their eyes.
It was a bit of magic that left members
both admiring and inspired to run
home and pick up the paintbrush!

“I love the fluid nature of
watercolor. To me, the interaction
of artist with the medium is like a
dance – full of motion, feeling, and
expression. Discovering new color
and composition as the painting
develops is my joy. As a teacher,
my goal is to enable the students
to find their connections with
watercolor in new and expressive
ways.” ~Janet Rogers, AWS

News From the North – UWS Cache Valley Chapter (CVC)
President’s Message
Well, I think most of us have a good toe hold on this
year’s UWS season. Our October CVC members’
meeting was treated to a demonstration by Jerry
Fuhriman. We appreciate all the excellent help we get
from more experienced artists, and are anxious to try
out what we have learned.
One of our October plein air outings was combined
with the growing “Sketch Crawl” activity on Saturday,
Oct 8. A small group participated, but the beauty of the
Logan River was ample reward. Four of us spread out

Another new development that we are very excited about is our December
Exhibition, entitled “My Town.” We are using a new venue this time, the historic
Thatcher Mansion, which was restored to pristine condition a few years ago. It
was built in 1878 for the banker George W. Thatcher and his wife, Eunice
Caroline (Luna) Young Thatcher. Her brother, Brigham Young Jr., lived in it
from 1883 - 1885 while he supervised the Brigham Young College, now Logan
High School. We are looking forward to December, when we get to try out our
new location at 35 W 100 S in Logan. Come see the exhibit!
