About AnointingM r. F illm ore’s S unday m orning lesson,

O ctober SO, 1910, was on the anoin ting of Je su s by M ary in the house of Simon the leper.

T he speaker called atten tion to the fact th a t every Bible le$son has a cen tra l idea, and explained th a t the cen tra l idea in this lesson is the oil used in the anointing. Oil symbolizes love, and as oil reduces fric tion and quiets troubled w aters in the exte rn a l w orld, so love harm onizes all d iscords and quiets all the tu rbu len t waves of m ortal thought.

M ary represen ts the soul, and if she pours her holy, ano in ting oil of love th roughout the body, it w ill be freed from a ll the tense, hard conditions which unloving thought has produced. T hose who th ink they are tired of life and w an t to go aw ay to heaven are in error. T he body needs only to be righ tly understood and righ tly trea ted to show fo rth the beauty and glory of perfec t life and hea lth here and now. I t is not an old garm ent to be la id aside, but a living rea lity in the tr in ity of man. I f it is not expressing its p erfection it is the fau lt of the th inker who has bu ilt it, and his w ork is not to lay it aside, bu t to transfo rm it.

W hen the disciples com plained of the w aste of oil, Jesus said to them , “W hy trouble ye the woman? fo r she hath w rought a good w ork upon me. F o r in th a t she hath poured th is ointm ent on my body, she did it for my b u ria l.” This ou tpouring of love upon his body was necessary before he could allow him self to be b u ried ; fo r the resurrection cannot take p lace w ithout D ivine Love. Love m ust do its perfec t work in the body first, and make w ay fo r the inflow of the resurrection life.

T he ta lk covered m any other points of in te rest and helpfulness, and the quickening pow er of the W ord of T ru th was present.

O ur fa the rs ate the m anna in the w ilderness ; as it is w ritten . H e gave them bread out of heaven to eat.

Jesu s therefo re said unto them , V erily, verily , I say unto you, I t was not Moses th a t gave you the b read out of h eav en ; bu t my F a th e r giveth you the tru e bread out of heaven.

F o r the bread of God is th a t which com- e th down out of heaven, and giveth life unto the w orld.

T hey said the re fo re unto him, L ord , everm ore give us th is bread.

Je su s said unto them , I am th e bread of life ; he th a t cometli to me shall not hunger, and he th a t believeth on me shall never th irs t.

I am the b read of life .Y our fa th e rs d id ea t the m anna in the

w ilderness, and they died.T his is the b read which cometh down

out of heaven, th a t a m an m ay ea t thereof, and not die.

I am the living b read which came down out of h eav en : if any m an ea t o f th is b read , he shall live fo rever: yea and the b read which I wTill give is m y flesh, fo r the life of the w orld.

T he Jew s th e re fo re strove one w ith an other, saying, How can th is m an give us his flesh to eat?

Jesu s th e re fo re said unto them , V erily , verily , I say unto you. E x cep t ye ea t the flesh of the Son of m an and d rink his blood, ye have no t life in yourselves.

H e th a t ea te th my flesh and d rinketh my blood hath e te rn a l l i f e ; and I will raise him up a t the la s t day.

F o r my flesh is m eat indeed, and my blood is d rink indeed.

H e th a t ea te th m y flesh and d rinketh m y blood abideth in me, and I in him.

As the liv ing F a th e r sent me, and I live because of file F a th e r ; so he th a t eateth me, he also shall live because of me.

This is the t r e a d which came down out of heaven: not as the fa the rs did eat, and d ie d : he th a t ea te th th is b read shall live forever.

F o r I received of the L ord th a t which also I delivered unto yo i, how th a t the L ord Jesu s in the n igh t in which he was betrayed took bread ;

And when he had given thanks, he b rake it, and said. T his is my body, which is for you: th is do in rem em brance of me.

In like m anner also the cup, a fte r supper, saying, T his cup is the new covenant in my blood: th is do, as o ft as ye drink it, in rem em brance of me.

F o r as o ften as ye eat th is bread, and d rink th is cup, ye proclaim the L o rd ’s death till he come.

W herefore whosoever shall eat the b read or d rink the cup of the L ord in an unw orthy m anner, shall be guilty of the body and th e blood of the Lord.

B u t le t a m an prove him self, and so let him eat o f the bread , and d rink of the cup.

F o r he th a t ea teth and drinketh , eateth and d rinketh judgm en t unto him self, if he d iscern not the body.

F o r th is cause m any among you are w eak and sickly, and not a few sleep.
