Dear Friends and Colleagues Thank you to all the professorsstaff and students who made theTransportation Engineering Open

House and Cal Day a success for our admittedstudents in the Transportation Engineering CityPlanning and the MCPMS dual degree One of thecomments I enjoy hearing from students who come tocampus for the TE Open House and other welcomeevents is how hospitable and engaging the campuscommunity is and you all are a part of that

I know many of our students stepped in as leaders andshared their life and research experiences at UCBerkeley in addition to the many professors whoparticipated in office hours and sessions and staff whohelped organize and made sure events ran smoothlySpecifically I want to highlight all the work andparticipation that went into our TRBrsquos Critical Issues inTransportation A Research Agenda for the 21stCentury panel especially professor Susan Shaheenwho organized invited and moderated the panel andthe ITS Seminar Lagrangian amp Sparse Control forMulti-Agent Dynamics amp Traffic featuring toptransportation leaders and alumni The day reallyshowed off our programs community and researchso thank you again to all who made the day possibleand our potential students feel welcome As we look ahead to welcoming new students itrsquos alsoa bittersweet time as commencement is coming up Ithas truly been a pleasure to get to know our studentsover the year or years depending on the program andwatch them grow in their academic pursuits I amexcited to see what they do in the next chapter of theirlife and career and I hope to see them at TRB alumnievents and working in their new careers

Please join our Transportation Engineering MEngand dual degree students for the College ofEngineering Commencement Ceremony TuesdayMay 21 2019 from 9ndash1130 am at the Hearst GreekTheatre or for the Civil and Environmental Engineeringreception in front of OrsquoBrienMcLaughlin Hall followingcommencement Join the City and Regional Planningand dual degree students for the College ofEnvironmental Design Commencement Sunday May19 2019 at 7 pm in Zellerbach Auditorium orthe Commencement Reception which will take placeprior to the ceremony at 430 pm at the WursterCourtyard I am also excited to announce that the CEDcommencement speaker is none other than our ownalum Therese McMillan As we look forward to what our students will do next Iam eager to see what our researchers are working onas the Request for Proposals 2019-20 SB1 ResearchGrants was issued last week Proposals are due at 5pm on May 30 2019 I was very pleased with thegreat work ITS Berkeley produced from the last roundof SB1 funds If you are looking for inspiration or arecurious about what wersquove produced in the past checkout the statewide UC ITS eScholarship page whichfeatures 21 policy briefs and 30 ITS reports from thelast round We have so much to look forward to and so muchgoing on as deadlines and the end of the semester areapproaching I appreciate your tenacity as theacademic year winds down and I hope you are able totakes some time to enjoy the nice weather and theclosing of the semester festivities Hoping to see youat one of the commencement activities
