ITS Berkeley Director's Letter View this email in your browser TSRC Director Susan Shaheen moderated the TRB’s Critical Issues in Transportation: A Research Agenda for the 21st Century discussion with panelists Neil Pedersen, TRB Executive Director, alum Therese McMillan, MTC Executive Director and alum YuYu Zhang, associate professor at USF. Dear Friends and Colleagues, Thank you to all the professors, staff and students who made the Transportation Engineering Open House and Cal Day a success for our admitted students in the Transportation Engineering, City Planning, and the MCP/MS dual degree. One of the comments I enjoy hearing from students who come to campus for the TE Open House and other welcome events is how hospitable and engaging the campus community is, and you all are a part of that. I know many of our students stepped in as leaders and shared their life and research experiences at UC Berkeley, in addition to the many professors who participated in office hours and sessions, and staff who helped organize and made sure events ran smoothly. Specifically, I want to highlight all the work and participation that went into our TRB’s Critical Issues in Transportation: A Research Agenda for the 21st Century panel, especially professor Susan Shaheen who organized, invited and moderated the panel, and the ITS Seminar Lagrangian & Sparse Control for Multi-Agent Dynamics & Traffic featuring top transportation leaders and alumni. The day really showed off our programs, community, and research, so thank you again to all who made the day possible and our potential students feel welcome! As we look ahead to welcoming new students, it’s also a bittersweet time as commencement is coming up. It has truly been a pleasure to get to know our students over the year, or years, depending on the program and watch them grow in their academic pursuits. I am excited to see what they do in the next chapter of their life and career, and I hope to see them at TRB, alumni events and working in their new careers. Please join our Transportation Engineering, MEng, and dual degree students for the College of Engineering Commencement Ceremony Tuesday, May 21, 2019 from 9–11:30 a.m., at the Hearst Greek Theatre or for the Civil and Environmental Engineering reception in front of O’Brien/McLaughlin Hall following commencement. Join the City and Regional Planning and dual degree students for the College of Environmental Design Commencement Sunday, May 19, 2019 at 7 p.m. in Zellerbach Auditorium or the Commencement Reception, which will take place prior to the ceremony at 4:30 p.m. at the Wurster Courtyard. I am also excited to announce that the CED commencement speaker is none other than our own alum Therese McMillan! As we look forward to what our students will do next, I am eager to see what our researchers are working on, as the Request for Proposals 2019-20 SB1 Research Grants was issued last week! Proposals are due at 5 p.m. on May 30, 2019. I was very pleased with the great work ITS Berkeley produced from the last round of SB1 funds. If you are looking for inspiration or are curious about what we’ve produced in the past, check out the statewide UC ITS eScholarship page, which features 21 policy briefs and 30 ITS reports from the last round. We have so much to look forward to and so much going on as deadlines and the end of the semester are approaching. I appreciate your tenacity as the academic year winds down, and I hope you are able to takes some time to enjoy the nice weather and the closing of the semester festivities.
