PRELUDE Diapason Piece Samuel Wesley

PASTOR’S GREETING, INTRODUCTIONS, AND LIFE OF THE CHURCH

CALL TO WORSHIP L: No great flowing fabrics of red hanging from sanctuary ceilings, yet this is still the day we celebrate Grace’s breath flooding into our shuttered hearts. P: On this day, clad in our pajamas, sitting at home may we continue to let the Spirit of new life breathe upon us! L: From near empty sanctuaries, through video worship, we gather with our sisters and brothers,

proclaiming that we are God’s Pentecost. P: On this day, we would touch (virtually) all who remain sheltered in place, safe in God’s grace. L: There will be no Pentecost birthday cakes, no balloons released, no butterflies emerging from cocoons, yet in the days to come, we will continue to speak of God’s love and the Spirit’s peace for all. P: So that even apart, people will know they are not alone, And that when that day comes, and we know it will, people will find a community awaiting them when they once again venture out into the light of God’s world. L: Let us worship God!

HYMN #285 Like the Murmur of the Dove’s Song BRIDEGROOM (See music in bulletin)

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Merciful and gracious God, Our hearts cry out for You to make us whole again. Even as we celebrate that You have come to dwell within us, We have sinned against You and abandoned Your commandments. We have been jealous, possessive, ambivalent, and impulsive. We have not heeded Your Word and we have not cherished Your covenant. Help us to glorify You in all times and in all places. As our souls thirst for Your living waters, Quench our needs and satisfy our love That we may come back to You and be sent forth To fill the world with Your mercy and grace.

DECLARATION OF PARDON L: God has promised to send us the Spirit, that we might know fully God's presence in the world and in our lives. P: We know that the Spirit of forgiveness and understanding flows over us this day and always. Thanks be to God, we are forgiven. L: Let us worship God!

DOXOLOGY Hymn #606 Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

SCRIPTURE READING: Acts 2:1-21 (NRSV, Pew Bible p. 885)

2 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And

suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the

entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them,

and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and

began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6 And at

this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them

speaking in the native language of each. 7 Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all

these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own

Page 4: Trinityaztrinitypres.org/200531sm-bulletin-10am.pdfTrinity Sunday, May 31st, 2020 Trinity Presbyterian Church 630 Park Avenue Prescott, Arizona 86303 (928) 445-4536 CHIMES The chimes

native language? 9 Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and

Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya

belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and

Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” 12 All

were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others

sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.”

14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea

and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15 Indeed,

these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. 16 No, this is

what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

17 ‘In the last days it will be, God declares,

that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,

and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,

and your young men shall see visions,

and your old men shall dream dreams. 18 Even upon my slaves, both men and women,

in those days I will pour out my Spirit;

and they shall prophesy. 19 And I will show portents in the heaven above

and signs on the earth below,

blood, and fire, and smoky mist. 20 The sun shall be turned to darkness

and the moon to blood,

before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. 21 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Adapted from the Belhar Confession We believe in one holy, universal Christian church, the unity of the communion of saints of the entire human family. And we believe that this unity of the people of God must be manifest and active, in that we love one another; that we give ourselves willingly and joyfully to one another, that we share one baptism together, that we eat of one bread and drink of one cup together, that we confess one name, one Lord, for one cause, with one hope, which is the height and the breadth and the depth and the love of Christ, forever and ever. Amen.

HYMN Love One Another Bill Wolff

Love one-another, show that you care. Give to each other, you'll find Him there.

When sorrow has found you, when you're feeling all alone.

You'll find Him in your brother's eyes; and He'll take you home. (refrain)

And when you are happy, when joy fills you up inside. Open up your heart and share it; it's a joy you can't hide. (refrain)

Oh, don't hesitate now. This moment will forever pass!

Open up your heart and find, a love that will last. (refrain)

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND INTERCESSION, CONCLUDING WITH THE LORD’S PRAYER

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power

And the glory, forever. Amen.

TUI AMORIS IGNEMIrregular

The original text of this chant from Taizé is a shortened version of a text sung in the Latin mass after thereading of the gospel on Pentecost. The full text can be translated: “Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of yourfaithful; and ignite the fire of your love within them.”

This text on the Holy Spirit was written to fit the pre-existing tune. The three stanzas cluster around variousthemes developed through a series of images and grounded in the refrain: how the Spirit comes, to whomthe Spirit comes, and for what purposes the Spirit comes.

GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

286Breathe on Me, Breath of God

In both Hebrew and Greek, the words for “spirit” can equally well be translated as “breath” or “wind,” so itis very appropriate to address the Holy Spirit as the “Breath of God.” This tune by an English organist hasbecome the customary one in North American hymnals.

Let’s get together on Zoom! We are all missing our church family connections and support. As a way to fill this need, Trinity will begin a zoom Sunday morning fellowship time from 9:30 AM to 9:58 AM as a

lead into Sunday worship. In order to participate, simply contact the church office at 928-445-4536 ext 113 or [email protected] and provide your email address. You will

then receive an email with a link that gives access into this virtual gathering. It is important that this link be used only for your own personal entry into the zoom meeting. Please do

not forward or share the link with others. Thank you! We look forward to seeing and greeting many of you through this platform soon.

The Trinity Project

Please note that the Trinity Project is available on our YouTube channel, “Trinity Things, Staying Connected!” which is easily accessed from the

church website aztrinitypres.org. Look over on the right-hand side under “Staying Connected” and click on YouTube. You can find previous Trinity Projects in case you missed them and be sure to keep an eye out for the

latest version featuring Kelsey Claire as speaker sharing her talk

“Behold, I Will Do a New Thing!”.

The CARES Act, which was signed into law on March 27, 2020, included two new

charitable tax deductions for the 2020 tax year. The first provision, which will apply to

many of us, allows for individuals to deduct up to $300 of cash charitable deductions

(for example, your annual church giving) even if you do not itemize your deductions.

In other words, if you use the standard deduction, you can still deduct as much as

$300 off of your gross income which will then reduce your taxable income.

The second provision, which will apply to just a few of us, removes the 60% limitation

on charitable contribution deductions for 2020. This would allow for someone to give

100% on their income to charities and be able to deduct all of it.

Please note that these provisions only apply to cash contributions and are not available for contributions to

donor advised funds or gifts to 509(a)(3) supporting organizations.

THIS WEEK’S ANNOUNCEMENTS

PENTECOST OFFERING: The Pentecost Offering unites us in a church-wide effort to support young people and inspire them to share their faith, ideas, and unique gifts with the church and the world. Psalm 71 testifies that a foundation of faith established during childhood helps ensure lifelong faith and service. Through the Pentecost Offering, you are nurturing the faith of those who are the church to come –children, youth, and young adults. You can give by indicating Pentecost Offering on a check to Trinity, text the word YOUNG to 56512, go to www.pcusa.org/pentecost, or call 800-728-7228 ext. 5047.

THE FRIDAY WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY FELLOWSHIP would like to extend a special invitation to all the women of Trinity to join in on Friday mornings at 9:30 AM to their Zoom gathering online. If this stay at home order has found you with extra time or a need for social interaction and a spiritual lift, please consider joining this special group. Contact the church office at [email protected] or call 445-4526 ext. 113.

RUTH CIRCLE TAPESTRY is coming along beautifully. Thank you to everyone who has dropped off prayer cloths for this project. More material would be much appreciated. If you haven’t done so, open up your linen closet or that blanket chest and see what you have that could be put towards this project of love and hope. Mary B. is happy to arrange a way for you to get material to her. Just send her a quick email at [email protected].

THE PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY meets the second Thursday of each month, at 1:00 PM via zoom. Join us if you knit or crochet or would like to learn! Contact Charlene (928-771-8845) if you would like to receive a prayer shawl; we present them to our members who are welcoming a new baby, graduating high school, turning 90, or feel in need of the comfort of a prayer shawl.

VBS HAS BEEN POSTPONED: At this time our VBS program is postponed with the hope of offering it later in the summer. We will keep you informed as to how and when we will move ahead with this valuable and important ministry. Thank you for your patience.

COMMUNITY CUPBOARD NEWS: Thank you for your food and money donations. The money goes a long way because our buyer purchases items at a big discount for us. If you want to bring food please look for sales on canned fruit, canned meat, and peanut butter. These items are needed the most and cost the most for our buyer to purchase. Also, please continue to bring paper or plastic grocery bags and put them in the Community Cupboard box in the hallway outside the church office. THANK YOU!

CARE TEAM MISSION STATEMENT: To foster caring relationships within our church family as we hold each other up in prayer, encourage one another with phone calls, greeting cards, prayer shawls, home and hospital visits as well as acts of kindness for those in need such as bringing over a meal, help with grocery shopping or giving a ride to a medical appointment. YOUR MISSION "If you choose to accept it": is to let us know if you need

our assistance!! Contact the church office: 445-4536 ext. 113, Charlene: 771-8845 or 273-6093, or Charlie: 925-0057.

LIKE OUR TPC FACEBOOK PAGE! The Outreach Team invites the Trinity family to go to our Trinity Presbyterian Church (TPC) Facebook page to like it! When in Facebook search, “@TrinityPrescottAZ” to find it and there you have options to like it, leave a comment, and/or share it with “friends.” This is a powerful tool to help us get the good word out about TPC.

PER CAPITA - As Presbyterians, we agree to participate in the life of the wider church by serving Presbytery, Synod, and General Assembly. One of the ways we do this is through

our Per Capita apportionment which is how we mutually share the cost of coming together to discern the Spirit's leading for the future. Each member is responsible for their share of this cost. The Presbytery of Grand Canyon approved the 2020 Per Capita apportionment at $37.35 per member. Per Capita gifts should be made payable to Trinity and will be forwarded on to the Presbytery.
