September 1969; United State of America – Department of
Defend (DoD) started The Advanced Research Project Agency (ARPA)
The first ARPANET node was installed at University of California, Los Angeles
Mid 1970s – ARPANET covered to more than 30 universities, military fields, and government contractors

The used of internet bloomed the computer science community
1983 the internet had hundreds of computer connected within the network
1985, The National Science Foundation (NSF) collaborated with ARPA to support the development of supercomputer centers and the computer science research in ARPANET
NSF sponsored one program to repair the backbone of ARPANET by increasing the bandwidth from 56Kbps into T-1 and then into T-3, and also formed branches that connected international web in Europe and Middle East

1989 – the responsibility and management of ARPANET was officially handover by the DoD to the NSF which was research oriented
Since then, research organization and universities became the user of the internet
Most of the etiquette and rule of use for internet such as sending email and information to the newsgroup was created at that time

Mid 1990s – internet had created connection within 60 countries and more than 2 millions computers with more than 15 millions user world wide
The used of internet for the reason of commercialization and business was not permitted until the year 1992, however, businesses had become the core to the development of internet
2001 – about 407.1 millions internet user covering 6.71% world population
2003 – more than 550 billions documents online and about 7.3 millions documents and websites developed each day

Internet is formed by connecting local network to the computers in each network which is called gateways
Gateway connections can be through; Phone line Fiber optic cable Radio connection
Additional network can be connected through a new gateway

Information sent from computer to another computer assigned by the address of the computer
Different address formats are used for different services via internet
One of it known as dotted decimal like 123.4.5.67.89
Other like “machine.dept.univ.edu”

End of each address represents organization type, such as; Education = .edu Military = .mil Government = .gov Non-profit organization = .org Malaysian website = .my
