NEW DELHI, June 19:The government today can-

celled the Kailash ManasarovarYatra of batches 2 to 10 due totorrential rains and flood inUttarakhand that have causedheavy damage to the route.

The road between Almoraand the road-head at Tawaghathas been washed away at severalplaces and some major bridgeshave also been damaged.

Walking trails beyondTawaghat have also suffered badlydue to landslides at several places.

“The state and local adminis-trative authorities estimate thatthe restoration work may take up

to one month to complete”, theExternal Affairs Ministry said ina statement.

“Since the safety and securi-ty of the Yatris is of paramountimportance, the Ministry hasdecided to cancel Batch Nos. 2-10 of this year’s Kailash-Manasarovar Yatra,” it said.

The yatra, held from June 9to September 9, is organised bythe Ministry. This year, 18batches, each with a maximum60 yatris, were planned to besent for the Yatra.

The Yatra involves trekkingat high altitudes of up to 19,500feet, under inhospitable condi-tions, including extreme coldand rugged terrains.

The yatra is undertaken byhundreds of people every year.In 2012, a record number of 774Yatris had undertaken the Yatra.

Each batch takes 22 days tocomplete the yatra. Out of these,14 days are in Indian territoryand eight days are inside theChinese territory of Tibet.

The total distance of thisyatra is 647 km (one side) in theIndian territory and 243 km (oneside) inside the Chinese territory.(PTI)
