Minister’s Message

OFSRuleArticle19:Mindfulthattheyarebearersofpeacewhichmustbebuiltupunceasingly,theyshouldseekoutwaysofunityandfraternalharmonythroughdialogue,trustinginthepresenceofthedivineseedineveryoneandinthetransformingpowerofloveandpardon.

Messengersofperfectjoyineverycircumstance,theyshouldstrivetobringjoyandhopetoothers.

SincetheyareimmersedintheresurrectionofChrist,whichgivestruemeaningtoSisterDeath,letthemserenelytendtowardtheultimateencounterwiththeFather.DearSistersandBrothers:

Article19ofourrulechallengesustobe“mindful”ofourcalltobebearersofpeace–unceasingly.In1979,theNationalAssistantsCommission(nowtheConferenceofNationalSpiritualAssistants)preparedcommentaryontheOFSRule.SpecificallyforArticle19:“AparticularlyFranciscanministryispeace-making.PeacegrowsoutofthesearchforpersonalintegrityandharmonywithothersandthediscoveryofGod’spresenceeverywhere.Itisbuiltupbyaffirmingoneself,seeingothersasrevealersofGod’slove,takingapositiveapproachtosolutions,andcommunicatingconstantlywiththeLord.Itisputtingasideallthoughtofviolenceandembracingalargenessofheart.Theresultofpeaceisjoyandhope.Aspecialapplicationofthisministryofpeace-makingispreparingfordeathatwhichtimeapersonarrivesattheultimateencounterwithGodandaneternalpeaceinhispresencethatfulfilltheearthlyquestforpeace.” Peacestartswithourselves–don’tbeviolenttoourselves.Oncepeacegetsrootedinourhearts,thenwearebetterabletospreadittoeachpersonweencounter.Oftenthelastpartofthisrulepuzzlesmembers–doesitreallyfitin?TrustinginGod’speaceandplanforus,weshouldbeatpeaceacceptingallthatGodgivesus,evenourencounterwithSisterDeath.Thisarticlealsochallengesustoserveaspeace-makersevenafterdeath.WewillbefocusingonsomepracticalwaystoapplythispartofArticle19duringourNovembergathering.Ilookforwardtoourexchange. Ludwigfullysupportedhereffortsatsanctity.Hefoundherthehighlyregarded,ifsevere,confessor,ConradofMarburg.Shewasrenownedforherprayerlife,andforherlovingservicetothepoor,thesickandthelepers.ShebecamethefirstGermanThirdOrderFranciscan--St.Francissentheroneofhiscloaks.ElizabethwasdevastatedwhenLudwigdiedsuddenly.Herin-laws,whofoundherlifestyleexcessive,wouldletherstayonlyontheirterms.Unabletoagree,sheandherthreechildrenleft.Shespenttheremainingfouryearsofherlifelivingamongthepoor.Shediedin1231atage24.WithSt.LouisIX,sheisthepatronessofSecularFranciscans.FormoreonElizabeth’slife,Irecommend:ElizabethofHungary:aStoryofTwenty-FourYears,byNestadeRobeck(TauPublishing:c2013,1954).Besidesgivingadetailedbackgroundonlifein13thcenturyGermany,itexplainshercomplexrelationshipswithherconfessorandherin-laws.Theappendicescontainthedocumentsleadingtohercanonization.TheiconistheworkofLewisWilliams,OFS.

OnNovember17,wecelebratethefeastofElizabethofHungary.DaughteroftheKingofHungary,shewasraisedinthehouseholdofherbetrothed,LudwigofThuringia.Thetwowereknownfortheirdeepmutuallove.
