Introduction
We are pleased to present the second Videoconferencing Newsletter from the London Grid for
Learning. You will find details of activities from individual schools and news of two important
partnerships that have been created in the past few months.
We try to maintain a current email contact with all LGfL schools that benefit from connection to the
LVCnet (London VC network) connection, but we are aware that staff move on and sometimes
forget to inform us - so please help us keep you up to date via email by contacting Roger Bloxham
[email protected]/[email protected].
The following descriptions of videoconferencing activities in schools are a clear illustration of the
wide range of uses for the technology. We are sure that other sessions are happening and we
should be pleased to hear about them for future newsletters.
The news items are arranged alphabetically by London borough. We hope that they will be a
source of enjoyment and inspiration. We have not published contact details for each school that
has contributed, but if you would like further information please [email protected].

THE LONDON BOROUGH OF BARNETCromer Road Primary School
Year 6 pupils at Cromer Road Primary School interviewed Michael Rosen via VC and asked him for
tips on writing poetryin particular personification. Inspired by meeting Michael, the pupils wrote
poems about the seaside and coast. They filmed and performed them, then uploaded them onto
www.performapoem.lgfl.net
The Mysterious Sea poem was chosen as one of Michaels top 10 poems on Perform a Poem.
THE LONDON BOROUGH OF BEXLEYNorthwood Primary School
Northwood Primary pupils have been keeping busy and have recently been doing a lot of work
with the BBC and a school in Gaza; we are hoping to VC with them soon.
At Christmas, Year 1 had a particularly busy day with the fantastic LGfL Santa Claus VC in the
morning (top left picture). In the afternoon they shared their Christmas traditions and songs with an
elementary school in New York (top right picture). The videoconference finished with the children
singing together "We wish you a merry Christmas" and a lot of waving goodbye.
Year 5 pupils shared Christmas traditions with schools in New York, Greece (bottom left picture),
Siberia and Turkey (bottom right picture). Northwood children made a video to show how to make
a traditional Christmas cake. We swapped video instructions with a school in Greece. Each class
then followed the partner countries instructions to make a cake.
A school in New York told us about their Thanksgiving traditions. They also introduced us to their
class pets: Mario the Hamster and George and Pinky (hermit crabs).

Northwood Primary was runner up in the Primary Category of the National Awards for
Videoconferencing (see Engayne Primary in Havering for more details). They were mentioned
during the National awards ceremony for their excellent classroom use of VC. Northwood won the
regional LGFL 2010 Primary award forBest use of LGfL services

THE LONDON BOROUGH OF BEXLEYNorthumberland Heath Primary School
At Northumberland Heath Primary School, Video Conferencing is integral to our aim to make
learning engaging, exciting and motivational. Video Conferencing is used to support all curriculum
areas and provide memorable experiences such as meeting Father Christmas! The children have
the opportunity to meet and interact with museums and experts. Moreover they have the
opportunity to view artefacts and other stimuli that they would not normally have access to.
Our Year 6 classes enjoyed a recent space video conference where the focus was problem solving
and working as part of a team effectively. They had to focus on their communication skills with their
team mates, astronauts through the video conference and also through instant messaging.
All classes use our video conferencing equipment,
even EYFS! Reception learnt how to care for pets
and brought their own cuddly toy pet into the
conference. Year 1 were able to meet
Goldilocks and ask her questions to support their
writing skills while Year 4 have just learnt about The
Blitz.
The children love having opportunities to use the
video conferencing equipment. A year 4 pupil
said, I like being able to meet new people and
learn about new things. Theyre really interesting!
A Year 2 pupil commented, Its amazing that
they can talk to you and hear you...my favourite
video conference was learning about the Great
Fire of London.
THE LONDON BOROUGH OF CROYDON
Children from Byron Primary School,The
Wattendon School and Howard Primary
School met Father Christmas and asked him
many questions. It was snowing a lot where
Father Christmas was. The children sang
Rudolf the red nose Reindeer while Father
Christmas played his guitar and sang too.
They met his talking dog Biffa and watched
a video of where Father Christmas went onhis holidays.

THE LONDON BOROUGH OF HAVERINGEngayne Primary School
LONDN PRIMARY SCHOOL WINS NATIONAL AWARD FOR VIDEOCONFERENCING
Stephanie Homewood (ICT and MFL co-ordinator)
and Head Teacher, Suzanne Ship, of Engayne
Primary School Havering, hold the trophy and
certificate for winning the Primary School Award for
Videoconferencing 2010.
The National VC Awards were organised byJANET. There were over 12 entries from schools all over
the UK entering the Infant/Primary/Junior category which was won by Engayne Primary School in
Havering. All entries demonstrated A maturity of use of videoconferencing as an embed tool in the
school environment.
Tim Boundy, JVCS, says We are glad to say that the judges (VC experts from LAs and RBCs all over
the country) thought that Engaynes entry showed an excellent variety of examples of how you use
videoconferencing across their school and the future planning of the use of the technology withboth staff and pupils.
Engaynes award was presented at the Schools VC User Event at the Royal Society on Monday 22nd
November 2010.
Engayne Primary School uses VC to save money and time for CPD
Engayne Primary School in the London Borough of
Havering has saved over4500 in just 1 year in CPD
costs (travel and supply cover) alone by using
video conferencing technology. The annual ROI
(Return on Investment - as a cost saving) has beencalculated at 30% (see table1) based on 11
planned meetings throughout the year to
Nottingham University which took place via video
link.
Engayne Primary has been using VC technology for
over 3 years and it is clear that it has made huge
savings for the school already, including saving
over 2700 travel miles annually and 66 hours of
teaching time in school saved for the staff members involved.
As a lead school for London in the National Outstanding Primary Schools SCITT (School Centred
Initial Teacher Training) programme Engayne, working with Nottingham University and 5 other
regional representatives from Yorkshire, Midlands, the NE, NW and SW, have been able to support
the work of SCITT in their regions. The Management board meetings and Lead mentor meetings

occur face to face as well as via video, in order to maintain the benefits that personal contact
brings.
Suzanne Ship, Head teacher at Engayne saysThe SCITT initially bid for the VC equipment as part of
the course 3 years ago and all 6 Head Reps from the different regions over England meet three
times a year using VC. The use of this technology means I can be in my school for the meetings
and not have to travel or stay overnight in a hotel. Without VC it would have made projects and
meetings with the SCITT programme much more difficult for us all. It is not only the financial benefits
of VC that make this technology value for money; time is very precious to any Head Teacher andusing VC saves me 48 hours a year (approx 6 school days)which I can spend with my pupils and
staff.

The London/New York State schools VC partnership
This new venture is a collaboration between the London Grid for Learning and similar organisations
across New York State. The scheme is open to pupils of all ages. However, at the moment, we have
sufficient enrolments from LGfL schools. We shall inform everyone when we are able to accept new
applications for a partner.

On Dec 7th 2010, Lord Jim Knight, former secretary of state for schools, officially opened the VC
partnership between London and NYS, as pupils from Harry Gosling Primary, Scargill Infants and
Oaks Park High School watch while linked live via video conference to NYS.
THE LONDON BOROUGH OF HAVERINGScargill Infant School
Scargill Infants has been pioneering the way by testing the technology with Bell Top Elementary in
New York State. Many schools since have been able to partner with NYS Schools.
Kath Keeper, Headteacher at Scargill Infant School says This has been an amazing opportunity. It is
fantastic to watch our children and those in New
York speak to each other and develop their
understanding of life so many miles away. The
technology has improved so quickly to facilitate this.
We have been video conferencing with schools in
other London boroughs and therefore obviously
were very keen to take part in this pan American
initiative.
The children are very keen to use video
conferencing and find out what life is like in other
countries. The children in New York were very curious
as to why our children had school uniform! We hope
to continue video conferencing as much as possible
to develop the childrens communication skills and
their understanding of other countries.
THE LONDON BOROUGH OF HAVERINGArdleigh Green Junior School
Throughout the beginning of the spring term, video conferencing at Ardleigh Green has become
much more regular. Year 3 have been very lucky and have experienced a number of different
video conferences.
So far this year we have had video conferences with 3 different groups. My favourite was when
we linked with the Met office where we met weather experts. We asked them questions and they
answered them for us, I was so excited. We have also spoken to Rise Park Junior School twice, and
a school in Devon. I felt nervous when meeting the other classes as I am shy, but now I have done ita few times I am happy to speak to them. Sebastian Abeledo 3M.

The children were very fortunate to be selected to participate in a video conference with the MET
office. They prepared a presentation based on the geography objectives for the weather topic we
were teaching at the time. The children subsequently made posters from this conference and
presented it to the rest of year 3. In addition, we have communicated with a school in Devon (seethe news from Waltham Forest) and we have compared the differences between our schools, their
location and the different weather we experience. The children have thoroughly enjoyed the
experiences so far and we are hoping to include video conferencing more across other year
groups, within this academic year.
THE LONDON BOROUGH OF HAVERINGRise Park Junior School
A report from Callum Nightingill in Year 5
Excitedly, Michael Rosen came to Rise Park Junior School via a video conferencing link. Firstly, we
asked him some questions to get to know him better. Then we enjoyed listening to him perform his
work. Lastly, he commented on some poems that we had written.
The thing I enjoyed the most was when he told me
about his favourite poem when he was a child. It
really made me laugh heavily! He was one of the
funniest poets Ive ever seen. The thing I found most
surprising is that his work is based on childhood. We
would like to say a big thank you to everyone.

THE LONDON BOROUGH OF HAVERINGCrownfield Junior School
Crownfield Junior school have made their first international school partnership via Video
conference. Steuart Weller Elementary in Virginia (USA) have partnered their 5th grade students
with Crownfields year 6 pupils. They have planned to communicate regularly via VC and email tolearn about each other, their schools and countries.
Suzanne Nott, ICT co-ordinator and Year 6 teacher, says "We are very excited about our VC
partnership to Virginia, we have already met the class teachers via video link and we have already
exchanged questions for our pupils to answer - we are very much looking forward to making
video-pals with them because we have a lot to learn about each other".
THE LONDON BOROUGH OF LAMBETHDunraven School
Dunraven students are currently taking Economics, Psychology and Law A-levels via VC. The school
has been using VC for teaching shortage subjects for at least 5 years. The benefits have been vast,
good exam results, the delivery of a shortage subject that could not normally have been taught
and a supported self study model, this means there is a lot of independent but guided learning
involved. Students have to be highly motivated to take these courses.
Nelson Thornes offer one hour tutorial session per week, per subject and the course normally runs for
a minimum of 30 weeks therefore 30 hour long tutorials. In addition to this there are 2 tutor visits per
year each lasting 2 hours. So there is a face to face element too.

THE LONDON BOROUGH OF NEWHAMCarpenters Primary School
Some three years ago I was adopted. Separated from my siblings, I was given away as some
unwanted gift. I was shown to my room known as the ICT Suite where some tests were performed
on me before being left to lay neglected for months, collecting dust and feeling sorry for myself. I
watched the two-eyed beings passing by, only occasionally being acknowledged, although
somewhat rudely. Whats that fingy? Some fancy camera innit. I wondered when I might one
day be allowed to show everyone what I could see. Although I have only one eye, I can see further
than any of them. I can see poets from all around the UK (left picture below), Tudor explorers,
inspiring mathematicians in Cambridge (centre picture below), choirs in Germany, beaches inNorthern Ireland, Tai Chi lessons from China (right picture below), weathermen at the Met Office,
teachers exploring Parma in Italy, orchestras in London, and authors sharing their intriguing arts.
One day I was noticed, and I showed them everything I could. The smaller beings began to talk
with me, wave at me, laugh with me and engage in what I had to show them. Soon I felt a sense of
belonging and I felt I was being talked about enthusiastically. I was told I was the closest of my kind
to the Olympics and that many more beings would want to connect with me. I am lucky really
although I wonder what has happened to my siblings.

THE LONDON BOROUGH OF REDBRIDGENightingale Primary School
Nightingale Primary school has been partnered with Hemyock Primary School in Devon. They planto meet via VC and set up a pen-pal programme where pupils from Year 4 will email another class
in Y4/5 in Devon about themselves.
An initial VC took place and pupils introduced themselves and talked about their individual schools
and about where they live. This content was led by the children and in Nightingale the children
took photos of things round the school that they thought where important and shared them.
We are looking forward to the pen-pal programme and hope to use VC for small groups of children
to meet and maybe even play some games. We hope that this will lead to a longer project about
each school learning about each others local area.

A videoconference to AntarcticaLearning about science from a real research scientist!
As supporters of Climate Week, Dabblerr.com organised, on the 23rd March 2011, a live
conference between 2011 Inspire Antarctic Expedition team in Antarctica and Year 12 A-level
students from Oaks Park High School in Redbridge.
The students questioned Arturo Pelayo, Communications
Officer for the 2011 Inspire Antarctic Expedition, on
various facets of life in Antarctica and were thrilled by
the responses. As the theme of the discussion was based
on renewable energy and climate change, studentswere educated on the types of renewable energy used
and the climate changes happening there due to
global warming.
They also had access to instantaneously shared photo
files of the base. This 2011 Inspire Antarctica expedition
has been led by 2041, an organization founded by

The London-Devon Partnership
We are delighted to have made a new partnership between LGfL and Devon schools. The main
thrust of the venture is to create a variety of comparisons between urban and rural schools
geography, history, daily life at school and at home, pupils aspirations. the possibilities are
endless.

children wonder how the Victoria line tunnels
were dug.
How does the village of Cheriton-Bishop survive
with just four buses a day?
Why does Walthamstow have so many
churches and places of worship?
THE LONDON BOROUGH OF WALTHAM FORESTEdinburgh Primary School
Edinburgh Primary School has re-established links with its India school through the use of daily video
conferencing. The project is a continuation of the British Council funded international link which
initially included reciprocal visits for teachers between the UK and India school.
Currently, Year 4 video conference to try to bring their learning in Geography alive by discussing
real issues with their peers in India. They also have the opportunity to ask questions which is so vital
for their wider understanding of the world which both develops their inquiry skills as well as address
misconceptions. In order to build a closer relationship between the two classes, the children of Year
4 will continue with their video conferencing throughout Year 5. The children from both countries
decide on the topics they want to talk about and it is linked to wider areas of study from both
schools including the environment, friendship and relationships and the rights of the child.
Quotes:
"I like talking to the children in India because it helps me to learn about their lives." Adil (Yr 4)
"They are so far away and are 6 hours ahead of our time so we have to meet them online at 9am
to make sure we don't miss them. It is really fun because we sometimes share jokes. Sometimes we
don't understand their jokes and they don't understand ours. But that is OK as we accept each
others difference - its part of learning about each other." Lili (Yr 4)
