Ryōkan (1758–1831) is familiar to many people as a great calligrapher and poet. This exhibition presents more than one hundred calligraphic and painted works in Ryōkan’s own hand from the collection of one of the premier collectors of his work, providing insight into the character of this great artist.

In classical Japanese music, instruments representing a variety of different forms and sounds were used. This

exhibition presents the development of Japanese classical music through the instruments and

Tea Scoop, named Namida ("Tears")

Sen-no-Rikyū (1522-91) carved this bamboo tea scoop and used it in his last tea gathering, after Toyotomi Hideyoshi ordered his ritual suicide. March 28, the memorial day of Rikyū's death, is called "Rikyū-ki." The scoop was later owned by Furuta Oribe who made the outer case for the scoop, then Tokugawa Ieyasu and the 1st Owari Tokugawa Yoshinao.

This exhibition explores the significance of warrior-class protocols and customs surrounding swords and the transfer of swords among daimyō families with the display of numerous famous swords, from pieces owned by Tokugawa Ieyasu from his estate that was divided upon his death, to swords that were bestowed upon the Owari Tokugawa family by successive generations of shoguns that followed.

In commemoration of the accession of the new emperor scheduled for May, this exhibition presents the various aspects of the culture cultivated at the imperial court through an array of calligraphic and painted works, interior furnishings and accessories, textiles, and other objects.

This exhibition traces the genealogy of battle scene illustrations that were produced continuously and repeatedly throughout Japanese history, from medieval battle scenes in illustrated handscroll form to Edo-period battle scenes painted on folding screens.
