HOW MONKEYS ARE TAKEN.
All old, linrd coconnut is tnkennnd n very Miinll liolc intulc In theshell. Furnished with this mill apocketful of boiled rice the sports-liin- n
sallies into the forest nnd stopsbeneath n tree tennnted with monkeys."Within full .sight of these inquisitivespectators ho first cnts a little' ricennd puts a quantity into the coconnutwith nil the ostentation possible. Thenut is then laid upon the ground nndthe hunter retires to n convenientnnibush. The render mny be sureHint no sooner is the ninii out of theirsight then the monkeys rncc helter-skelt- er
for the coconnut. The firstnrrivnl peeps into it, and seeing theplentiful store of rice inside, squeezes his hand in through the tinyhole nnd clutches n handful.
Now so paramount is greed overevery other feeling connected withmonkey nature, Hint nothing willinduce the creature to relinquish hishold. With his hand thus claspedhe ennnot possibly extract it, but thethought that, if he lets go, one hisbrethren will obtain the feast, isoverpowering. The sportsman soonnppenrs upon the scene. The un-incumbered monkeys lly in nil direc-tions; but the unfortunate brute, who still will not let the rice go, isthereby handicapped beyond hope ofaffairs quite fatal to rapid locomotioncither terrestrial or arboreal. Thesequel is that he falls captive to thehunter, n victim to his own greed.Even when caught he rends in theactions of his captors a design to robhim his rice, and he clutches it nilthe harder, and the very ilrst thinghe does when the nut is cracked anilthe hand released is to cram itscontents into his mouth. Thoughtsof escape conic afterward.
"You mustn't touch the top oftlic baby's, head," said a mother toher little four-year-ol- d; "she has asoft spot there that is very tender."The youngster gazed at it cjniouslyfor a moment nnd then asked, "Donil babies have soft spots on theirheads?" "Yes." "Did papa have usoft spot on the top of his head whenhe was n baby?" "Yes," replied the
' mother with a sigh, "and he has gotit yet." And the old man, who lindoverhead the conversation from anadjoining room, snug out, "Yes, in-deed, he has, my dear boy, or hewould be n single man ."
A little Alabama girl, three yearsold, on going to the window enrlyone yery foggy morning, cried out,"Oh, come here and look, mnininii! The sky is all'crammed down to theground." Again, when watch-ing tho cook skin some squirrels, hermother called to know what she was'doing, she replied,- - "I am seeingcook peel these eats!"
A country preacher was exhortinghis unbelievers, and his text was"The Flood" As ho waxed eloquentho said: "And Nonh warned thewicked thnt they might repent, butthey heeded him not; and the Hoodswiiiio nnd drowned them nil, nndvrbut do you suppose they thoughtthen?"

PREVENTION IS BETTER THANCURE.
As it is not clearly proved thatleprosy is not contagious, it is wellthat every means be taken to pre-vent contact between lepers andhealthy pcisons. Now, it is a well-kuo-
fact that friends of the lepers
"0 down to the Branch Hospital atKakaako to sec them, and, although
they do not go inside amongst them, yet tho only separation betweenthem is nn open picket fence.Through this they touch one anotherand pass pipes to and fro, so thatthe scpaiation is only nominal. TheBoard of Health thus, while appar-ently separating lepers, do not do so."While, tliercfoic, we do not wish forn moment to prevent them seeingand talking to their friends we wishto prevent any actual contact, andthis could be done by the erection of
a second fence, suillciently far fiomthe other, to prevent anything beingpassed from those inidc to thoseoutside. They could then sec andtalk as much as they pleased with-out any fear of their carrying anycontagion away with them.
It is the duty of the Board ofHealth to attend to this matter, either in the way suggested above or
lu sonic equally cfllcacious a method,'
or else to show conclusively thatleprosy is not contagious.

The Japanese warship Itiujio leftWellington for Chili, Feb. 2oth.Thence she will go to Peru, andthence to Japan via Honolulu, an ly-ing home in September. It appearsthat another Japanese man-of-w- arwill visit New Zealand next year, though whether Wellington will beselected as the port of call is notknown. It seems the passage fromJapan to New Zealand, for the train-ing of their future naval officers, is nfavorite one with the Japanese, thevoyage to England being considered a
too long, while that to the EastIndies is invested with too manyrisks in the shape of disease. TheJapanese think of testing the NewZealand maikct with spine of theproducts of their country.
