With his hand thus claspedhe ennnot possibly extract it, but thethought that, if he lets go, one hisbrethren will obtain the feast, isoverpowering. The sportsman soonnppenrs upon the scene. The un-incumbered monkeys lly in nil direc-tions; but the unfortunate brute,who still will not let the rice go, isthereby handicapped beyond hope ofaffairs quite fatal to rapid locomotioncither terrestrial or arboreal. Thesequel is that he falls captive to thehunter, n victim to his own greed.Even when caught he rends in theactions of his captors a design to robhim his rice, and he clutches it nilthe harder, and the very ilrst thinghe does when the nut is cracked anilthe hand released is to cram itscontents into his mouth. Thoughtsof escape conic afterward.
