EducationWeekNextweekwecelebratePublicEducationWeek.Thethemefor2016is'Sharedstories, better learning, stronger communities' we hope to share our learningandstorieswithyouallatWednesday’sopenclassroomsandBookParade.

Iamcontinuallyamazedatthegreatsportsmanshipofourstudents.ThisweekIhadthepleasureofattendingtheBocciaStateChampionshipswhereourteamofAshton,BladeandHarpercompletedthedayasthehighestrankedprimaryschool team in the state. The organiser commented on the way our teamdisplayed respectful competitiveness. This after I received complementaryemails about our netball teams last week. We want our children to alwayscompetebutinawaythatrespectsouropposition.

Overthelastfewyears,communicationbetweentheschool, teachersandourcommunityhasbecomemucheasierwithimprovedtechnologies,suchasemailandsocialmedia. Asasociety,wearenowinundatedwith informationallthetime,whichispositivebutcanalso impactpeople’swellbeing.Asaschool,weendeavour to keep parents informed about teaching, learning and specialeventsasmuchasishumanlypossible.

Asoneofourcoreexpectations isrespect, canparentspleasebemindfulthatteachers/staffarenotavailable24hours/day,7daysaweekandhavetherighttotheirpersonaltime. Communicationoutsideofschoolhoursandweekendsmay go unanswered until appropriate times. Emails that arrive immediatelybeforeschool,duringteachingandlearningtimemaynotbeseenuntilafter3pm. It isnotunreasonabletoallow48hoursforaresponsetoanemailduringtheterm.Asalways,inanemergencypleasecalltheladiesinthefrontoffice.

Recentlyweenlistedthehelpofagraphicdesignertoupdateourschool logo.Share your thoughts on the design through Facebook or through the schoolemail.Theimageislistedoverthepage.

Spelling Bee

LastweekBrookeAve held its annual Premiers Spelling Bee in front of a sell-out crowd!Wewere alltreated to somemagnificent spelling and wonderful sportsmanship. Congratulations to all those whocompeted,youareacredittoourschool!

OurwinnerfromStage2wasJai.N!Sanalia.VovercameHarveyKfor2ndplaceinanepicshowdown.Welldoneboys!InStage3,wewereagaintreatedtoafeastofspelling.Julita.Kfinished1st,Jeremy.S2ndandBen.Ycameinaclose3rd.

Jai, Sanalia, Julita and Jeremy will move on to the regional final on Tuesday 13th of September atWarnervalePublicSchool.Wewishthemallthebest.

Education Week Open Day

Wewould like to extend awarmwelcome to all familiesand friends to help celebrate Education Week at BrookeAvenuePublicSchoolonWednesday,17thAugust.Wewillbehavingaspecialassemblycommencingat9:15am.Ourdancegroupsandchoirwillbeshowcasingtheirtalents.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) will also be anintegralpartoftheday.MrDalkeithwillholdourveryfirstbarrel draw with fantastic prizes to be won. He will berevealingsomeexcitingnewaspectsofPBL.Sostaytuned!

PBL Rewards

In Week 3,staff began rewardingstudents with raffleticketsfordisplayingbehavioursthatareconsistentwithourthreecoreexpectations–Safe,RespectfulLearner.Welldonetoallstudentswhorecievedaticketinthefirstweek. Tell Them From Me Parent Survey

ThisTerm,ourschoolwillbeparticipatinginthePartnersinLearningparentsurvey,anotherpartoftheTellThemFromMesuiteofsurveys(student,teacherandparentsurveys)onstudentengagement.Thesurveyasksparentsandcarersquestionsaboutdifferentfactorsthatareknowntoimpactonstudentwellbeingandengagement.

Runningthissurveywillhelpourschoolunderstandparents’andcarers’perspectivesontheirchild’sexperienceatschool.Theseinclude:communicationbetweenparents/carersandstaff,activitiesandpracticesathomeandparent/carerviewsontheschool'ssupportoflearningandbehaviour.Thisvaluablefeedbackwillhelpourschoolmakepracticalimprovements.

Thesurveyisconductedentirelyonlineathomeoronpubliccomputers.Thesurveywilltypicallytake15minutesorlesstocompleteandiscompletelyconfidential.Theparentsurveywillbeconductedbetween22Augustand21October.Participatinginthesurveyisentirelyvoluntary,however,yourresponsesareverymuchappreciated.

School Magazine Centenary Celebration

LastTuesday,MsAustin,thewritingcompetitionwinnerMontanaand14otherluckystudentsfromStage2were invited toSydneyto celebrate thecentenaryof theSchoolMagazine- Luke,Madison,Vegas,McKaii,Sienna,Ashby,Jodie,Callan,Chontique,Bella,Jack,AlexandRyanPandF.WewokeupinthedarktomeetatTuggerahStationat7amandcaughtanexpresstraintoCentralwithournewOpalcards, thenacitytraintoSt James.WewalkedthroughHydeParkandpasttheArtGalleryofNSWtotheRoyalBotanicGardens.

Wewere greeted by the friendly organisers and each given a goodie bagwhich included a plasticponcho,apencil,asharpener,aneraser,asetoftextas,anotebook,abottleofwaterandacopyoftheveryfirsteditionoftheSchoolMagazine.Allforfree!

Our first workshop was ‘Creating Comic Serials’ with Peter Sheehan, the illustrator and author of‘Triller’ and 25 other books. He has also storyboarded films and won many awards. We lovedwatchinghimdrawandlisteningtohisadviceonourowndesigns.

Afterapicnic lunch,all the studentsgathered to formahuge100 for theSchoolMagazine’s100thBirthday,thenahuge200fortheRoyalBotanicGardens200thbirthday.Acameramantookphotoshighuponamassivecrane.Next,weallgatheredinthenewCalyxbuildingfortheawardceremony.TheMinisterofEducation,theGovernorGeneralandfamousauthorLibbyGleesonweresomeoftheVIPguests.Wehadtositinalphabeticalordersowewereinthethirdrow.Afterwards,wewereeachgivenasmallbirthdaycupcake.Itwasdelicious!

At our second workshop, the Taronga Zoomobile, zoo educators Ryan and Rod showed us aninquisitiveechidna,asleepybeardeddragon,aclingystickinsect,afattreefrog,ashyringtailpossumandaloooongdiamondpython.Itwasfantastictoseeandtouchthemupclose.

Finally,weboardedthewarmtrainaftercatchingviewsofCentrepointTower, theSydneyHarbourBridge,StMary’scathedral,mountedpolicewithtwoprotestsinHydeParkandalotof horse

poo.Callanandhisthreefriendsatetwobagsoflolliesonthewayhome!Ourtrainleftontimeanditstartedtopourdownabout20minutesbeforethetrainarrivedatTuggerah.Itwasafabulousday!

Eachyear,acrossAustralia,TheChildren’sBookCouncilofAustraliabringschildrenandbookstogethercelebrating Children’s BookWeek.During this time Schools, Libraries, Booksellers, Authors, IllustratorsandchildrencelebrateAustralianChildren'sLiterature.WewillbecelebratingBookWeekinWeek5(August15th–19th).Thethemeforthisyearis‘Australia-StoryCountry’.FormeIbelievethethemeembraces:*Australiaasacountry-itshistory,uniquenessandrichculture*Australia'sbeautifulanduniqueflora(plants)andfauna(animals)*IndigenousAustralians*Yourstory...whatmakesyouAustralian?BAPSwillbeholdingourBookCharacterParadeonThursdaythe18thofAugustat2pm.Ican'twaittoseeallyourcostumes:)The Book Fair will be in the library from Monday to Thursday. Netball Schools Cup Competition

OnThursdaythe28thofJuly,20stage3boysandgirlsheadedouttoAdcockParktorepresentBAPSintheNSWNetballSchoolsCupgaladay.Ourtalentedstudentswereorganisedintotwomixedteams,BAPS1andBAPS2,witheachteamplayingfourgameseach.Bothteamsplayedexceptionallywell,withBAPS1winningallfouroftheirgamesandBAPS2winningthreeoftheirfourgames.Thisresultisatestamentto the commitment and effort displayed by the student during weeks of preparation and training toimprovetheirskills,particularlytheirfootwork,whichwasoutstandingontheday.Allstudentsshowedgreatsportsmanshiptowardstheirteammatesaswellastowardstheopposingteams.AbigthankyoutoMrsHerringandMrsMcBridefororganisingtheteamsanddedicatingtheirtimetocoachthestudents.SpecialthankstoToby(Elkie’smum)andMsFrostforumpiringontheday.
