Background•Agricultureandlivestockaretheintegralpartoffarmingsystemandimportantsourcesoflivelihoodsinruralareas.Livestock,especiallydairyisoneofthemajorsourcesoflivelihoodforlandlessyouthandwomen.Healthandproductivityofmilchanimalsislargelydependentonfeedavailabilityaswellasitscostandquality.Spentmaltisgoodfeedmaterialforlivestockforimprovinghealth,milkyieldandfatcontent.

Spent malt•Spentmaltisabyproductofbrewingindustry,consistingoftheresidueofmaltandgrainwhichcontainscarbohydrates,protiens,ligninandwater-solublevitaminsasanimalfeed.

• Itisquitepalatableandisreadilyconsumedbyanimals.

Spent malt as a business model•ItisasuccessfulbusinessmodelinFasalvadivillage,MedakdistrictandreplicatedinAdarshawatershed,Kothapallyvillage,Shankarpallymandal,RangaReddydistrictinTelanganastate.

•TejasriwomenSHGhasundertakentheresponsibilityoftransportationanddistributionofspentmalt.

•Trainingoncare,handlingandmaintenanceofspentmaltwasgiventowomenSHGandfarmers.

Benefits to farmers

•Fifty-fourbeneficiaryfarmersareutilizingthespentmalt(1080kg/day)andfeeding268milchanimals.

•Totalmilkproductioninthevillageisabout1250lit/dayanduseofspentmaltasanimalfeed,increasedmilkproductionof1.5liter/animalperdaywasobserved.

• IncreasedgrossincomeonmilkproductionisaboutRs12950/daywithanetincomeofRs9710/day.

• IncreasednetincomeofRs.291420permonthwithanaveragenetincomeofRs.5400perfamily.

Benefits to SHG•SpentmaltisprovidedbythebreweryatthecostofRs.1.75/kgandSHGissellingatRs.3.0/kg.

•TejasriwomenSHGhasprovided397882kgofspentmaltandearnedanetprofitofRs22020during12monthsperiodaftermeetingalltheexpenses.
