ShortAnswer/Objective(20-30%)FortheMidtermandFinalExam,studentswillansweravarietyofshortanswerand/orobjective(matching,multiplechoice,etc.)questionsbasedoncoursematerial.Thesewillnotbeprovidedinadvance.ExtendedEssay(70-80%)FortheMidtermExamstudentswillwritetwoessays,fortheFinalExamoneessay.Possiblequestionsarebelow.Studentsneedtoprepareforallofthepossibleessays.Essaysrequiremuchmorethansimpleregurgitation.Rather,studentsmustthinkaboutideas,examples,andevidencefromlectures,discussions,andreadingsandusethemtosupportanddevelopastrongessay.Sincestudentshavethesequestionsfromthefirstdayofclass,theprofessorexpectsanswerstobeparticularlydevelopedandwillgradeaccordingly.Studentsmustcometoclasspreparedandwithaplanforeachquestion.Essaysmusthaveanintroductionwithathesis,severalbodyparagraphs,andaconclusion.Studentsshouldusekeytermsfromlecturesandreadingsandmustfocusonwho,what,when,where,how,andwhyquestions.Changeovertimeandhistoricalsignificancearemostimportant.Studentsmustshowhowdifferentconceptsareconnectedinanorganizedessay(e.g.,discussevents/peopleinorder,eitherchronologicallyorthematically).Essayshouldonlybedevelopedbasedonmaterialfromthisclass.Essaysthatdonotusebothin-classmaterialandreadingswillnotreceiveapassinggrade.Eachessaywilllikelybeatleast4-5pageshandwrittenpages.Keepinmindthatwhiletherearesomewronganswers,therearemanycorrectanswers.Partofthisassignmentisseeinghowstudentspullinformationtogetherincreativeways.Likewise,studentswillnotbeableto(andshouldn’t)discusseverything.Studentsmustmakechoicesandpickthebestexamplestosupportarguments.Thereisnochecklistof“dotheyhavethis.”Spellingandgrammardonotcount,providedwriting/ideasareunderstandable.Duringtheexam,studentsmayconsultoneone-sided8½”x11”sheetofnotes.ThesenotesmustbeTYPED,doublespaced,inTimesNewRomansize12.Thissheetmayonlycontainphrases,outlines,remindersofafewkeytermsorreadings,etc.ThissheetmayNOTincludefullsentences,fullparagraphs,etc.Studentsmusthavetheirsheetofnotesapprovedbeforetakingtheexam.Studentsmustturnthissheetofnotesinwiththeexam.Studentswhomakeagood“cheatsheet”tendtodomuchbetterontheexams.StudentsshouldbringseveralblueorblackpensandablankBluebook.BluebookscanbeboughtattheCollegeStore.Ontheexamday,comeearly.SetyourblankBluebookonthefrontdeskandwaitfortheexamtobegin.AtleastthreeBluebookswillbeneededoverthesemester.Anyformofcheating(usingextrastudyaides,talking,havingaphoneout,etc.)willresultinanautomatic“F”intheclass,andareportwillbefiledwiththeVicePresidentofStudentAffairs.Asareminder,nomakeupexamswillbegiven.Cometotheexamontimeandpreparedtoshoweverythingyouhavelearned.Studentsshouldplantowritetheentiretime.
