S. D. POPE, Principal. At the close of the exercises of Wednes-

day, we understand the pupils of the sem-inary were addressed by the Rev. Mr.Gerry, in a manner calculated to leave animpression in the minds of those present. His happy illustrations, and forcible ap-plications of practical truths, will doubt-less have the effect of awakening a deeperinterest in the youthful minds of thescholars attending our city school, in thevarious branches of study. We were dis-appointed at not being able to be present, but believe that at no time in the historyof our school, has more proficiency andinterest on the p;rt of the pupils beendisplayed, as is evident by the rolls ofhonor and the cumber of certificatesgrauted.

The P. T. Co, have been talking aboutconstructing locks around the falls andclaim to have sent an agent to the EasternStates to learn how to make 'em. Nowthis is all pretty well to talk, but we havean idea that the aforesaid agent had otherplans in view, and will probably spendmore time about Washington City, than atthose places where locks and canals " domost abound." If there are any locks orcanals up Salt river he may " take stock "of them.

The only Premiums which wereawarded to Gang Plows at the greatImplement trial at Mattoon, Sept. 4,1866, by ihe State Agricultural Society of Illinois, were awarded to thisPlow. .The following is an extract

from the Report of the Commissionerof Agriculture, for the year 1S66, andmay befound on page 26 of that re-

port ." The Gang Plow made by J. C. Pfeil,

Arenzville, Cass county Illinois, is receivedwith no little favor in the west. Almost in-

credible stories are told of its excellenceand efficiency in plowing the prairie fieldsof Illinois and other States.

' The depth of the furrow is regulated bythe crank-axle- , which is so arranged thattdt ploughs can be driven deeper or shal-

lower ut tue pleasure of the driver, when theteam is moving, by means or ine lever.

The question as to who shall keep thewafer works in repair canie up at the lastjneeting of the Council. Some were lib-
