African Americans during the war
•Many moved to the North and West looking for work•Mechanical Cotton Picker
•By 1970 ½ of all blacks lived outside the South
•They found some good work
•But still faced racism…race riots erupted (same with Mexican-Americans)
•The Modern Civil Rights movement began during this time.
•NAACP membership shot up
•CORE (Congress of Racial Equality) created in 1942
•Many served (Tuskegee Airmen) but in segregated units
