What’s Happening in Wireless
Life is great!
iOS and Android devices have redefined what uses expect when mobile
Consumer mobile experience is shaping user expectations
Smartphone are now outselling basic handset
With 4G, wireless networks are catching up to wired with regard to reliability and capacity

• Doing “business” with “consumer” tools
• Balancing user requests/preferences with enterprise
requirements for security, control, and support
• Enabling business transformation based on mobility

Enterprise Mobility Benefits Accessibility: Reach critical people at critical times
Productivity: Work more effectively out of the office
Information: Immediate access to information to make decisions and respond to customers
The Result
1. Business Responsiveness: Efficient, effective, productive
2. Business Transformation: Access to information is one of the few ways a company can differentiate itself today
The right information
In the right hands
At the right time
For competitive advantage

FMC and Mobile UC
• Virtually all IP PBX and UC vendors offer mobile UC solutions- few sales. “Call forwarding” (or equivalent) is still the predominant
form of FMC
• Mobile UC should be a success: We still need a “business telephone system”
Users divide their time between work and mobile
UC provides better communication tools for enterprise mobile users
Integrated with the wired network
Dual mode (Wi-Fi/Cellular) versions can easily pay for themselves

Why IS Mobile UC Not Happening?
• Mobility is a major topic in UC; “UC” has not even been a topic in mobility
• Mobile UC clients provide a “disintegrated” user experience and generally with a different features on each platform- don’t measure up to the consumer app experience!
• Many UC capabilities already exist in an integrated form in smartphones
• Cellular buyers operate independently of IT and with their own set of issues
• Lack of faith in voice over WLAN option

Can Microsoft Succeed Where
Others Have Failed? Microsoft is coming at the market from the desktop
rather than the PBX direction
Support all of the main operating systems, including
Windows Phone (no surprise there!)
Having control of the phone’s O/S can allow much
deeper integration with Lync- if Microsoft chooses to
exploit it.
Some early adopters (like Lionbridge) have been
very enthusiastic- and they’re using Windows Phone
