SCHOLARSHIP GUIDE 7
Essays are a common requirement when applying for scholarships. The scholar-ship essay is your means of communi-cating your story, dreams and goals to the selection committee and allows the committee to get to know you and see your potential. The quality of your essay will be a determining factor for earning a scholarship award. Essays should be 1-2 double-spaced pages using 1" margins and 12-point font and should include the following:
• Your name at the top of the page
• Your educational and career goals
• Activities and achievements in your community, at work, or in school (leadership, community service, student organizations, etc.)
• How a scholarship would help you meet your educational and career goals
• Any other information you would like the scholarship committee to consider such as obstacles you have overcome, qualities or skills that distinguish you from others, etc.
Here, and on the following page, you will find essay samples and helpful writing tips.
SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY
Kent Flash
My name is Kent Flash and I am a senior at Geneva High School. I was born with an
entrepreneurial spirit. As a young child, I had a lemonade stand and as a teenager I started my own
lawncare service, managing the finances and developing the marketing strategies myself. My parents
are small business owners and have encouraged me to pursue my dream of one day taking over my
family’s business. A college education is the foundation for a successful career and I have chosen to
attend Kent State University at Ashtabula to pursue a bachelor’s degree in business management. I
know that I will gain the knowledge and skills I will need to help grow my family’s business.
One of my proudest achievements is my first degree black belt in karate. I have been active in
karate since I was six years old and this experience has brought me both physical and mental strength
that I carry with me in all aspects of my life. I serve as a volunteer at my dojo, helping my karate
instructor with his children’s karate classes and serving as a mentor to those children. At school, I
am president of the student council and play first base for our varsity baseball team. When I am not
working on schoolwork or involved in my extracurricular activities, I help out at my parent’s business.
As small business owners, my parents are worried about the current economy and how it impacts
their business. A scholarship will help me make my career goals a reality without putting added stress
on my parents’ finances. My goal is to graduate with my bachelor’s degree with as little debt as
possible so that I am able to invest as much as possible into growing our family business.
I have learned many valuable lessons through my experiences, especially that hard work does
pay off. I know that my strong work ethic paired with a business degree from KSUA and the financial
support of a scholarship will allow me to realize my goals and help to make a difference in my
community. Thank you for your consideration.
Be sure to include your full name.

SAMPLE ESSAY
Essay- Writing Tips
In addition to minimum requirement criteria such as GPA and enrolled credit hours, essays are heavily weighted in determin-ing the award of any available scholarship. A well-written, carefully constructed essay can very well be the determining factor in awarding a scholarship. The following are some suggest-ed tips for a successful scholar-ship application:
• Create an essay that is well thought-out.
• Be sure that you specifically ad-dress what is being asked.
• Proofread before submitting - misspelled words, grammatical errors and improper punctuation may cost you the scholarship.
• Have someone else review your application - a second pair of eyes may find something you missed.
Jane Doe
My name is Jane Doe. I am a student at Kent State University at Ashtabula working toward
an associate degree in nursing. I have wanted to become a nurse ever since I was a little girl and
saw firsthand positive impact that nurses had on my mother and our entire family during her illness.
I love to help people, and I cannot think of a profession that would be more fulfilling than nursing.
Once I complete my associate degree and begin my career as a registered nurse, I hope to continue
my education and earn a bachelor’s degree in nursing. My dream is to one day work as an oncology
nurse or work in Hospice care.
My class schedule can be very demanding; however, I feel that it is important to be involved on
campus and in my community. I am currently the secretary of the Student Nurses Association and
serve as a Student Ambassador at KSUA. These roles have helped me to develop my leadership and
communication skills. Off campus, I serve as the leader of my daughter’s Girl Scout troop and am
active in the PTA at my children’s school. I also participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
each year to honor my mother’s fight against cancer.
I put off my college education for many years, always making excuses and waiting for the “right
time” while settling for unrewarding jobs. Finally, I decided that I would do whatever it takes to make
my goal of being a nurse a reality. With my family’s support I have been able to quit my job and
attend school full time, but this has put a significant strain on our budget. A scholarship would help
to minimize the amount of debt I incur and allow me to focus on school rather than worrying about
our finances.
Receiving a scholarship would give me the encouragement and confidence I need to achieve my
goals, make my family proud, and give me the opportunity to dedicate my career to my mother and
the nurses who played such a significant role during a difficult time in our lives. I am committed to
working hard in school and would appreciate any opportunity that can help me on my journey.
Be sure to include your full name.

ASKING FOR RECOMMENDATIONSRecommendations play an important role in determining how others view you. It is yourresponsibility to select the most appropriate individuals who will support and advocate for you. It is suggested that you select individuals you interact with often and who are familiar with your talents, successes and abilities. When approaching someone for a recommendation, always be respectful of their time and schedules.
• Be outgoing. Ask your teachers, counselors, coaches and community leaders. If they are familiar with you, they will be glad to assist you if given enough time.
• Provide them with the recommendation form filled out with your information. Also, supply them with details of awards, volunteering, outside community activities or pertinent information that they may not know, to provide a well-rounded perspective.
• Make sure they have plenty of time to formulate their thoughts and return the form. About two weeks before you want to submit your application should be sufficient.
• Follow up within a week prior to the deadline you established with them to see if they need additional information.
What is an education worth?According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, an education is worth plenty.
“Full-time workers age 25 and over without a high school diploma had median weekly earnings of $492, compared with $666 for high school graduates (no college) and $1,187 for those holding at least a bachelor’s degree.”
– U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014 Current Population Survey
