ScenePD 4.0 Quick Start Lessons
Overview
The following lessons will teach you the skills needed to draw
most incident scenes. Using ScenePD, follow the step-by-step
instructions to create the ten sample drawings shown here. Each
drawing builds upon the skills learned in the previous lesson.
Once you have completed the lessons, you should be ready to begin a drawing of your own!
Lesson 1 – Floor plan

Description
A crime has taken place in an apartment building. To begin your diagram of the crime scene,
you will create a floor plan of the apartment.

2 Lesson 1 – Floor plan
1. Start ScenePD.
2. Click “click here” to begin
with a drawing template.
3. On the New Scene window,
click the Structures button.
4. Click the 30’ x 50’ template.
5. Click OK.
6. You are now looking
at the exterior of the
building. Click
(the Zoom Out
button) twice to give
yourself more room
around the building.
7. The building size is
actually 40’ x 60’.
Change the size as
follows:
a. Click on the top
wall. It turns
green. Drag it
upward until the
measurement from
the bottom wall
shows 40’.
b. Click the right
wall and do the
same, so the
measurement
reads 60’ from the
left-hand wall.

8. Create the leftmost
interior main wall by
dragging the vertical Add
Wall tool onto the work
area, inside the structure,
until it measures 12’ from
the left outer wall.
9. Create three more main
walls as follows:
a. Wall 1: Drag the
horizontal Add Wall
symbol onto the
structure and position
it so that it is 12’
from the bottom
outer wall.
b. Wall 2: Drag the
horizontal Add Wall
symbol and position
it 5’6” above the wall
you just placed.
c. Wall 3: Drag the
vertical Add Wall
symbol and
position it 25’
from the first
vertical wall you
placed.
10. The upper horizontal wall does not go
all the way to the right exterior wall.
Click on the wall to select it. Drag its
right Square Handle until it is 11’ from
the vertical wall.

11. Drag the four remaining walls onto
the structure:
a. Wall 1: A vertical
wall 11’ from the
right outer wall.
b. Wall 2: A vertical
wall 11’ from the wall
just placed.
c. Wall 3: A vertical

wall just placed.
d. Wall 4: A vertical wall
6’3” from the wall just
placed.
12. Add 8 doorways to the building,
their locations are indicated by the
blue dots:
a. Click on the Add
36” Doorway symbol. Drag the
doorway to the
location of the first
blue dot. A doorway
will appear. Fine-
tune its position,
then let go of the
button.
b. Repeat step a seven
times, placing the
doorways as
indicated by the
remaining blue dots.

13. There are two big 10’ doorways in
the back of the building, indicated by
the blue dots. To create them:
a. Drag the Add 36” Doorway
symbol into place.
b. On the Properties Bar at the
bottom of the screen, click the
arrow next to the Door Width
item. Type 10’ in the text entry
box. Click OK.
c. Position the new door 1’10” from
the little door.
d. Repeat steps a-c to create the 10’
doorway on the other wall.
14. Add one big window and
three small windows.
Window placement is
indicated by the blue dots.
a. Drag the Add 72”
Window symbol up
front (upper right
exterior wall). Position
as needed.
b. Drag the Add 24”
Window symbol to each
of the three offices.
Position as needed.
15. Congratulations! You
have successfully
completed Lesson 1.
Your drawing should
look similar to the one
shown here.

Description
Unit 1 was moving through the intersection. Unit 2 ran a red light, and then turned to the right to
avoid Unit 1. Unit 2 struck Unit 1, and Unit 1 skidded across the intersection. There is minor
damage to both vehicles.

1. Start ScenePD (if you have
not already done so).
2. On the New Scene window,
click the Streets button and
4-Way to select the 4-way
intersection template.
3. Click OK.
4. You are on the streets layer.
Click the street on the left.
5. Type Elm Street.
6. Click the street on the top.
7. Type 8th Avenue.

8. The text is off center. Click
the text and a green rectangle
appears.
9. Drag the text box to the
center of the street.
10. Click the Symbols layer tab.
You are now on the Symbols
layer, with the Vehicles
toolset selected.
11. Click the Passenger > Car
subset and drag the Midsize
car to the upper right corner
of the intersection.
12. Click the Pickup/Van/SUV
subset and drag the Minivan
to the lower-left corner of the
intersection.
13. Use the Circle Handles to
rotate the car and the van into
position.

Note
14. To color the car tan, select
the car and click the Dark
Tan color button on the
Properties Bar.
15. To color the minivan black,
select the minivan and click
the Black color button on the
Properties Bar.
16. To label the vehicles, click
Label, drag Unit 1 onto the
car and drag Unit 2 onto the
minivan.
As you drag the label over the
vehicle, a green rectangle indicates
the locations where the label may
be placed. Once placed, you can
always reposition the label using
the Position button on the
Properties Bar.
17. Click Roadway > Marks.
18. Drag two Skid Marks onto
the intersection and move
them into position.

19. Drag Debris 2 between the
two vehicles.
20. Click Roadway > Signals.
21. Drag Signal - Red 1 to the
middle of the intersection.
22. The red light is facing the
wrong way. Right-click the
signal, point to Rotate Left,
and then click 90°.
Tip You can access many
useful commands by right-
clicking any object.
23. Congratulations! You have
successfully completed

should look similar to the one

The driver of Unit 1 accelerated to turn and struck Unit 2 as it was crossing 1st Street.

1. Start ScenePD (if it is not
already open).
2. On the New Scene window,
click the Streets button and
then click the Tee
Intersection template.
3. Click OK.
4. Click the horizontal street
shape. Use the Square
Handle at the right end to
drag the street down at an
angle.
5. With the street still
selected click the Lanes
up arrow on the
Properties Bar. A lane
will be added.

6. Drag the Horizontal street
symbol onto the drawing so
that its right end slightly
overlaps the intersection.
The new street will join the
intersection automatically.
7. Use the Square Handle at the
left edge of the street to
shorten the street. (You may
need to scroll to the left to get
the view you want.)
8. Select the vertical street and
type 1st Street.
When you label a street, ScenePD
places the street’s name in a
default location inside the street. If
this location is not optimal you can
drag the name to another area of
the street.
9. Drag the text box to the
bottom, out of the way.

10. Select the street on the right
and type State Street.
11. Move the text out of the way,
as you did for 1st Street.
12. With the Streets toolset still
selected, drag the Crosswalk
to 1st Street.
The crosswalk will
automatically “snap” to the
street.
13.Click the Lanes & Shoulders
toolset.
14. Drag the directional arrows
out to State Street and rotate
them into position.
15. Click the Symbols layer tab.
16. Unit 1, a Jeep, is partially in
the crosswalk. Add Unit 1 as
follows:
a. Click on the
Pickup/Van/SUV subset
and drag the Jeep symbol
onto the work area.
b. Position the jeep as
indicated in the example
and color it olive.
c. Click the Label subset
and drag Unit 1 onto the
Jeep.

17. Unit 2, a bicycle, is on its
side. Add Unit 2 as follows:
a. Click Vehicle > Cycle
and drag the Bicycle Side
symbol onto the work
area.
b. Position the bike as
indicated by the example
and label it Unit 2.
c. The bicycle is facing the
wrong way. Click
(Flip button) on the
Properties Bar.
18. Click the Roadway toolset
and the Posted Signs subset.
Drag out and position two
stop signs.
19. Select the Tags/Other toolset
and the Indicators/Arrows
subset. Drag
North Indicator 3 onto the
drawing.

20. Use a corner Square Handle
to make the symbol smaller.

Unit 1 failed to notice the upcoming intersection. The sudden attempt to stop caused the semi to
jackknife.

1. Open ScenePD (if it is not already
open).
2. On the New Scene window,
click the Streets button and
then click Straight.
3. Click OK.
4. On the toolbar, click the
Zoom Out button.
5. Click the street.
6. Type Main Street.
7. Click the Lanes &
Shoulders toolset.
8. Drag the 2 Way Left Turn
Lane tool onto the street.
9. To increase the width of the
travel lanes, click the Lane
Width arrow until the width
is 12 Ft.

10. Change the width of the
turn lane:
a. Select the street and then
click in the turn lane to
select it.
A green selection line
will run along the lane
and new buttons will
appear on the Properties
Bar.
b. Click the Divider Width
arrow (on the Properties
Bar) until the lane is
12 Ft wide, or enter the
desired width into the
textbox manually.
11. Add the turn bay:
a. Click the lower turn lane
stripe. A dashed line will
appear along the stripe.
b. Drag the Triangle Handle
at the right end of the
stripe to open the turn
bay.
c. Use the stripe’s middle
Triangle Handle to
shorten the turn bay.
12. Drag the Add Shoulders
symbol onto the street.
13. Drag the Add a Bike Lane
symbol onto the lower edge
of the street.
14. Move the Main Street text
box up, out of the way.

15. Label the bike lane:
a. Click on the Text drawing
tool - - on the left
toolbar.
b. Click in the work area;
your pointer will turn to a
cross hair . Hold
down the left mouse
button and drag to create
a text box.
The Edit Text window
will appear when you
release the mouse button.
c. Type Bike Lane.
d. Click OK.
16. Reformat the text:
a. Right-click upon Bike
Lane and choose
Properties from the
shortcut menu.
b. Change the Size to 2’.
c. Click to italicize.
d. Click to Left-justify.
e. Click OK.
You may need to adjust the
length of the text box to align
with bike lane.

17. Click the Symbols layer tab.
18. Drag out Trailer 28ft from
the Semi/Trailer subset.
Rotate symbol into position.
19. Add the tractor to the trailer:
a. Drag out Tractor LN.
Rotate it into position as
indicated in the
example.
b. Change the color to
Orange.
c. Label the tractor Unit 1.
20. The tractor appears on top of
the trailer. To fix this, right-
click on the tractor, point to
Arrange and then click Send
to Back.

21. To make the truck a single
object, follow the steps
below:
a. Drag a selection box
around the tractor and
trailer to select both
of them.
b. Right-click in an empty
area. Do NOT right-click
on the truck or you will
lose your multiple
selection.

shortcut menu.
22. Drag the tractor-trailer to the
right and rotate it into
position.

Description
Due to icy conditions, Unit 1 lost control, crossed the highway, jumped a shallow ditch, smashed
through a chain link fence, swiped a juniper bush, flipped on its side, and slid into a tank in the
National Guard depot.

area.
6. Right-click on the street,
point to Set Profile and click
Triple Arc.

curve the road, as indicated

8. The street striping should
change from “no pass” to
“pass” for southeast-bound
traffic. To change the stripes,
follow the steps below:
a. Click the Stripes toolset.
b. Double-click the Double
Solid pattern tool.
Position the pointer at the
left end of the stripe, hold
down the left mouse
button, and move the
pointer to the right (along
the stripe). Release the
mouse button just after
the sharp turn.
c. Double-click the Dash &
Solid pattern tool. Position
the pointer at the right end of the
stripe, hold down the left mouse
button, and move the pointer to the
left (along the stripe). Release the
mouse button at the double solid
pattern.
Before you release the mouse button,
make sure that the pointer is on the
lower side of the stripe. This will ensure
that the dashes appear below the solid
stripe.

9. Click the Symbols layer tab.
10. Drag out, resize, and position the
following items:
a. Ditch from the Roadway >
Roadside toolset. The ditch
should run along the right
side of the road.
b. Building from the Roadway
> Roadway toolset. Label
the building Armory.
c. Bush from the Roadway >
Roadside toolset. Position
the bush so that it is in front
of the Armory. Use the side
Square Handles to elongate
the bush until it matches the
length of the Armory.
d. Fence 1 from the Roadway >
Roadside toolset. Position
the fence alongside the ditch.
e. North Indicator 3 from the
Tags/Other toolset and the
Indicators/Arrows subset.
Position it to the lower left of
the work area.
f. Not to Scale from the
Tags/Other toolset and
Indicators/Arrows subset.
Position under North symbol.
You can adjust the work space view
as needed by using the arrows on the
bottom and right side of the work
area.

11. To draw the tank, using the
drawing tools located on the
left toolbar. You will copy
and layer the Rectangle,
Square, and Circle shapes as
follows:
a. Draw a long, black
rectangle.
c. Copy the rectangle by holding
down the CTRL key and
dragging the rectangle. The
original remains intact as you
drag the copy.
d. Draw an olive rectangle on top
of the two black rectangles.
e. Draw a dark green square on
top of the olive rectangle.
f. Draw a long, black rectangle
in front of the green square.
g. Draw a black circle on the
upper left corner of the green
square.
h. Drag a selection box around
the tank to select all of the
shapes.
i. Right-click in an empty area
(not on the shapes) and choose
Group from the popup
menu.
12. Copy the tank two times using
the CTRL-drag method.
Position the tanks in a row,
near the right side of the
Armory.

a. Drag out an SUV from
the Vehicles >
Pickup/Van/SUV
toolset.
b. Name the SUV Unit 1.
c. Copy it four times.
For illustration only, the text has
been placed on top of the vehicle.
d. Right-click one of the
SUVs and click Show
Outline Only.
Repeat this step until you
have four “ghost”
vehicles.
14. Position the five vehicles,
placing the gray SUV against
the tank.
15. With the gray SUV selected,
Click on the Properties
Bar to flip the vehicle. Click
the addition Flip buttons as
needed to correctly position
the SUV.

16. To draw four arrows, follow
the steps below:
a. Click the Tags/Other toolset
and the Indicators/Arrows
subset. Drag out Arrow 1.
b. Click the up arrow on the
Line Width text box
(Properties Bar) until width is
5”.
c. Right-click on the Red
color selector on the
Properties bar. This will
change the arrows line
color to red.
d. Copy the arrow three
times using CTRL-drag.
17. Position the arrows along the
vehicle path.
Shorten/lengthen and curve
the arrows as needed.

screen.

on the toolbar to zoom into points
1 and 2.

a. Click the Symbols layer tab.
b. Click the Person toolset and the
Bubbleman subset.
c. Drag the Man symbol onto the drawing;
position the symbol between marker
points 1 and 2.
Use the external Circle Handle at the
right of the body to rotate the symbol
counter-clockwise a few degrees.
10. Use the internal Circle Handles to
position the body parts as shown.

Note
11. The right arm appears to be under the
torso. To position the arm in front of
the torso, drag the Bring Part to
Front tool onto the forearm. A red
circle appears to identify the body
part under the tool. Release the
mouse button to move the forearm on
top.
12. Do the same for the hand.
In addition to the Bring Part to Front
tool, you may also access the Send Part
to Back and Remove Body Part tools.
13. Drag and place the four clues, as follows:
a. Place a Cigarette symbol at marker
point 3. The Cigarette symbol is
located in the Person symbol set in the
Personal subcategory.
b. The pistol is a Llama Ruby Model XII.
This is similar to the S&W Model 10.
Drag the S&W Model 10 from the
Object toolset, Weapons | Handguns
subcategory and position the symbol
on marker point 5 as shown.
c. Under the Person toolset,
Prints/Tracks subcategory, use the
Shoeprint Flat symbol for the shoe
print at 4, and the Shoeprint Heeled
symbol for the boot print at 6. Position
as shown.

14. Draw the walking trail:
a. Click the Closed Shape drawing
tool on the left toolbar.
Your cursor will turn to a
crosshair in the work area.
b. Position the crosshair where you
want the trail to start. Press the
left mouse button and then draw
the trail, clicking at each corner
point.
c. When you reach the last corner
point, right-click to close the
shape.
d. Change the Color to
Cream on the Properties
Bar.
e. Right-click on the path,
point to Arrange and
click Send To Back to
ensure the trail is under
the body.
15. Draw the tree stumps:
a. Click the Circle drawing
tool on the left
toolbar. Your cursor will turn to
a crosshair in the work area.
b. Hold down the left mouse button
where you wish the stump to start
and drag.
Release the mouse when you are
finished drawing.
c. Color the stump Dark Brown.
d. Copy the symbol twice and size
and position accordingly.

16. Select each clue and label
accordingly. You may need to
change the position of the text – you
may do so by clicking the Position
button on the Properties Bar.

Description
Your county has a number of rural roads with four-way stops where one road has a right turn
lane with a yield sign. You want a template to use whenever an accident occurs at such an
intersection.

1. Start ScenePD (if it is not already
open).
2. In the New Drawing window,
click the Streets button and then
click the 4-Way template.
3. Click OK.
4. Click twice.
5. Lengthen the right and bottom
streets. (You may need to scroll
down and to the right to view
the entire drawing.)
6. Click the lower-right curb
return to select it, and then
use the green square handles
to extend the curb return until
it is approximately 60 feet
each way.
Watch the Setbacks
measurements on the
Properties Bar as you drag
the handles.
7. To draw the island, follow the
steps below:
a. Click the Closed Shape drawing tool
on the left toolbar.
Tip Closed Shape is an important
tool because it lets you draw any
shape with a border and interior.
b. To make a triangle, click at position
1, then 2, then 3, and right-click.

c. Position the triangle at the yield
corner.
d. Use the Diamond Handle on the
right side to create a curve.
8. The stripes are extending too far
into the intersection on the right
and bottom streets. To fix this,
follow the steps below:
a. Click (the Eraser
drawing tool) on the left
toolbar.
b. Position the eraser at the
point where you want to
begin erasing. Hold down
the left mouse button and
move the eraser over the
stripe you want to erase.
Release the mouse button
where you want to stop.
Tip Double green bars appear
to show where the stripe
is erased. You can adjust
the erased section by
dragging these bars.
c. Repeat steps a and b for the
other street.
9. Click the Symbols layer tab.
10. Click the Roadway toolet and
the Posted Signs subset. Drag
out and position a Yield sign.
11. Add four generic signs:
a. Drag out Generic Sign 1.
b. Right-click on (Red) on
the Properties Bar to change
the symbol’s line color.
c. Copy the sign three times.

d. Position the generic signs
at each street.

The library at St. Anthony High School was vandalized. Perpetrator(s) broke a side window on
the first floor, stole two computer monitors and attempted to steal another. The third computer
monitor lay on the floor, damaged, but does contain a print. You will be exporting the major
area of damage as a bitmap image.

16. Add the bookshelves:
a. Click the Counter
symbol and drag onto the
structure.
b. Use the Triangle Handles
to lengthen and widen the
symbol. Use the Circle
Handle to turn the counter
to a horizontal position.
Tip Counter shapes will
automatically align
with the closest shape.
For instance, if you
want the counter to be
horizontal, drag
it into the work area
next to the middle
counter.
c. While the symbol is still
selected, click the Light
Brown color selector on
the Properties Bar.

the semi. Right-click on

22. With the placard selected, type

The classification numbers will

type in file name.
e. Click Open button. Your
logo now appears in the
preview box.
f. In the ScenePD Options
box, check the box next to

main menu, click Tools >
Options. The ScenePD Options
window will open:
a. Select Print Standard under
the Printing option. All
boxes must be included.
