Oakville Venom teams have plenty ofmomentum as they host a bantam girls’basketball tournament this weekend.
The AAA bantam squad is coming offa gold-medal performance at theBrantford CYO Tournament last week-end, its second tournament title of theseason. The AA team, meanwhile, wonsilver at the same tournament.
This weekend’s Oakville BasketballClub tournament tipped off this morningand will conclude with semifinal andfinal contests tomorrow (Sunday) atAbbey Park High School.
In Brantford, the AAA Venom won allfour of its games, improving to 9-0against Ontario competition this season.Oakville downed Valhalla, Dundas,Welland and Blessed Sacrament, asJovana Momic and Emily Wilk earneddivision 1 MVP honours.
Also contributing were RachelleCyrus, Courtney Den Elzen, AlexRuscica, Nina Guzina, Kayla Davis,Courtney Chambers, Sarah Traynor,Leah Fleming and Rasheeka Gunn.Coaches are Pat Traynor and CassandraCyrus.
The AA Venom, meanwhile, went 2-1in division play before downing PortColbourne in the semifinal. Oakville wasdenied gold with a loss to Ancaster in thechampionship game. Lydia Gibson wasnamed the Venom’s tournament MVP.

The Venom midgets also won gold atthe Brantford tournament, rallying froma 14-point halftime deficit to defeat theWelland Saints 49-43 in overtime of thetitle game.
The comeback completed a perfecttournament showing for Oakville, whichalso defeated Mississauga, Flamborough,Brantford and Hamilton Transway dur-ing the competition.
Players on the team include EllieHannaford, Ruta Rekus, Nevena Aksin,Amanda Swinhoe, Larisa Saplys,Selena Singh, Marti Killeen, NicoleGarcia, Kayla Harnden, BrittneyPhannenhour, Lea Kirkconnell andAlia Tewari. Bill Killeen and CharlesSingh are the club’s coaches.
Oakville’s novices almost became thefourth local team to medal at the tourna-ment, reaching the bronze-medal gamebefore falling 17-14 to St. Catharines. TheVenom went 3-0 in preliminary-roundplay and was the top seeed heading intothe semifinals, but it was upset 26-22 byScarborough.
Maggie Curran, Chloe Dickison,Stephanie Findlay, Anastasia Levreault,Ashley McDonald, Ellen Ougrinov, SarahPiercey, Kiana Steinhauer, CarolineSzustak, Jordan Tracey, Olivia Wilson andMelody Wyslobicky all contributed to theVenom’s strong showing.
